I wish the media does not hype over the one minute of fame and the prize money. instead bring in news of the hard work and the number of hours these players put in to reach there. why i stress on this is because, I feel somewhere down the lane, are we misleading the new generation there is easy money and fame.

Again after, the talent, the ambience of the day, the mind set up at that particular moment, the pressure also plays a part, and above all let us say there is a very very small percentage of luck.

Once, I heard a singer answering a question on her success of her concert, and she said, though we rehearse non stop and perfect ourselves for the concert, once we are in front of the audience, there are otherthings that could make/break a concert.

My 2 cents
Dear Shanthi
Only you can give a great reply.. IT is totally true the countless hours of practice, dedication and mental and physical stamina..
Here the media does not any manner minimise these aspects. In fact greater significance is given to these aspects.
But when you watch 2 very talented players and one wins by just a stroke or becuase of the other persons fault?
In an earlier reply I told about the basket ball finals going on now.. the last few seconds determine the winner!
How can that be.. luck has a pat albeit small, i think!
Thanks for sharing here:)

Hi AC,

I strongly believe, that it is the mind that plays more than the game itself in the winning shots. and the one who is able to do it better wins..may be that is luck????

I agree with you that in todays sports, the mental tenacity of a player makes all the difference.. and even upsets the outcomes.
But what I was referring to is beyond that.. Its just plain lucky.. You need that extra power from nature or God to WIN..and to continously win.. just my opinion.

Hi Chitra,
Absolutely ! One needs talent as well as luck to succeed !

Again here all these players are so talented. Hard working of course. Have what they need to win. How does one of them win?
Yes only one player can win. But when does the tide turn? So does it mean that its because of talent or luck. Does luck play a part in one's victory. How large a role does it play?
I think one definetly needs Luck to win. In fact I think one needs Lady Luck to shower on one to win. Talent alone will not get you anywhere.
Now this could be applied in any field; studies, dance , music and more.
However much anyone is endowed with talent can one survive with just that and hardwork.? Or does one need luck also added into the above mix to win?
What do you think?

Hello Monsi
Your one liner summed it up quite well!.. I too think so.. Only other factor I will add to your line will be hardwork!
No substitution for hard work:)

Hi AC,

Hardwork is a must not only in sports, but in all the fields/areas. There is no short cut to success. Hardwork, determination and will power are a must for a person to emerge victorious.

That said, I can completely understand your point...when 2 people are competing with each other, both equally talented, had worked hard etc..but only one of them win..there the "luck" comes in. We can call that by different names...but final sway happens because "Luck" favors one of them.

Does that mean that the other person has not strived hard or less talented? No...luck has favored one of them..but where, why and how it happens is perplexing to all of us !

That enigma, goes by different names....according to one's own beliefs and values. :)

A novel topic !

Cheers
Krithika

Sure hard work is an absolutely necessary ingredient for any one to even dream about becoming successful. But, luck/stars shinning/good fortune/God's blessings are surely an important part of the equation.

Hard work is something that we have control over and hence we focus more on that part. But luck/destiny being something that we have not control over, we tend to not think or worry too much about it. Rightfully so.

I agree with Shanvy that the efforts and hard work that goes behind all the success needs to be made known. And as you said AC, here it is quite publicized. Good for that.

As for Tiger Woods, he surely has worked very hard and dedicated a huge chunk of his childhood days in mastering the sport. I am a huge Tiger fan not just for his remarkable talent but also for his composed demeanor. A cool mind is a requirement for a sport like golf and he has developed that in great quantity. A few years ago I read a book written by his Dad Earl Woods - "Training a Tiger: A Father's Guide to Raising a Winner in Both Golf and Life." I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It had many interesting details about Tiger's growing up years and his Dad's role in shaping his future.

To quote a few things, it was Tiger's Dad's dream that his son become a golf legend. So when Tiger was born, his Dad had a small golf club placed in Tiger's crib. The reason being he wanted Tiger to think of golf clubs as a thing as natural as breathing or drinking milk. For Tiger's first birthday his Dad gifted him a golf set. As a toddler, golf clubs were Tiger's primary "toys"! His Dad learnt to play golf at a much later age and a few years down the road quit his full time job so that he could focus on his son's training and learning of the sport. There are many such interesting facts in the book.

I have read some about the tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and the hallmark of his childhood was also single-minded focus and dedicated efforts towards his art.

So surely all of these people who reach the top work very very hard. Much more harder than any above average person would.

But, they also have God's blessings/luck on their side that their efforts are amply rewarded.

SS
