Movies are so great for bringing back the past ! Im nostalgic already. Django, Lost in the Desert and Stalag17 also come to mind. I went to Day of the Jackal with my dad in Casino theater in chennai and they refused to allow me in since it was an adults movie. So my dad dint want to go back all the way home and talked to the manager and he allowed us in !

If u would like, I could suggest u some good movies of those days, like Night of the Generals ( Omar Sharif, Peter O toole), Becket (Peter O Toole) , this was remade into the hindi hit Namak Haram ( Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachan), and many other good ones I can suggest, which u can borrow from the library.

Recemntly watched Sound of Musio, and me and wife were mercimermized by it, seeing after maybe 40 years.

Kamal isnt it nice for just us to sit and watch old movies without kids around!.. The only two in the list I have not heard of is the Generals and Becket but saw the Hindi version.. wasnt that an incredible movie???

Dear AC, since you asked I have to write about my tent movie experience. When we visited our grand parents in the village, they had movies projected onto a big white cloth (sometimes torn and sewed together) in an open field. I was there for one of those movies.

Being grand daughters of the village Patwari, though we were given special treatment elsewhere, we would be same as everyone in the movie crowd. There were the hardworking villagers with the stinking sweat, rough skin, old smelling and dirty clothes and we used to push through that crowd to reach a platform in the corner and watch the movie. The sound waves fly towards the fields and we couldn’t hear anything. The image was dilute and blurry thanks to the poor technician, the ripped reel and the extra magnification!! But still people (Including us) have to see the movie.

Meanwhile someone has to relieve themselves and they would do it right there around the bush, shielding their behinds with their sarees, dhotis etc. And the fluid would run down the dry dirty slope far..far away. Sorry for being so graphic, but I am actually amazed at my memory. I was around 5 years old then and I still can see it in front of my eyes!!

The movie I saw was a Telugu movie called ‘JagathJenthrilu’ (Hard to pronounce but it means Jagat + Janthrilu = World’s rogues/smart/cunning people etc). After the movie when we went home, my grandma asked me the name of the movie I just saw and do you know what I tell her – With all my five-year-old knowledge and Telugu Vocabulary I said ”Jagan Cheddilu” –(Jagan’s underwears)!

hi AC,
had a gud time reading this...you must be one Frederick Forsyth fan...Day of the Jackal, Odessa File,... reminded me of my dad...he likes good english movies and so would take me only to such kind...you insisting that your son watched them reminded me of my own childhood....dad would insist that i watch those english movies, and i, like your son ended up liking them...
he raised me on a diet of movies like Last Emperor, bridge on the river Kwai, etc etc...i would also get to see a movie in a theatre only if it was this kind, or english children's movies...like roger rabbit, home alone, etc... and he would never approve of eating stuff sold in theatres too...
now of course, after marriage, i've enjoy movie outings with dh, we settle down with at least pepsi and a big tub of popcorn ....
last year i had been to some multiplexes in mumbai and chennai, and i must say, they are so well maintained, and neat, the pricier tickets are kind of justified....

well, as of now, waiting to see dasavatharam here....

Dear Santosh
sometimes they fuss about these small things.. If memory serves me right I dont think there was any very violent scene in the whole movie.. unlike todays violence I mean. Many English movies were screened in the Casino Theatre!
