While I was anxiously waiting at a busy traffic signal, for the green light to appear to cross the road, a speeding Bullet motor bike stopped near me, with screeching breaks, as the signal turned red for the vehicles. Since the bike was at close quarters, I could see him, no it was her! The sight of a young woman riding a bike , with utmost confidence and control, maintaining a cool composure, amid a maze of screaming vehicles surprised me. It was also a moment of pride for me, for I could see, how women had evolved through all these years from a simple cycle and empty roads to a pretty Scooty and a mighty Bullet, amid sickening road rage. But one look at the other male riders behind her and some others nudging her with their horns blasting, gave me only one positive affirmation- men are highly jealous about women overtaking them not only on the roads but in every other field.

When I see women riding autos, call taxis, buses, heavy vehicles etc I could feel the enormous pressures and responsibilities they have to carry on their slender shoulders given the expertise required not only in handling difficult machines but also myriad human beings and emotions that come along with them amid the extreme male chauvinistic attitude prevailing today.

Men prefer girls with a liberal attitude when they are dating but when it comes to marriage they want a girl who does a decent job like teaching which does not involve mingling with their male counterparts even in their dreams. They still want her to be seen like a heroine of the yesteryear Tamil movies, turmeric smeared face with a big kumkum on her forehead and her freshly washed hair tied up in a towel, touching his feet, waking her dear hubby from his late night sleep with a steaming cup of coffee. Doesn’t matter if husband can sleep till late afternoon or even nights after an overnight drinking binge. Many of the men folks do not hesitate making fun of working wives just because she wakes up not before 10 am on Sundays. Why do not they pause for a moment and realize that she is also a human being with flesh and bones just like them and needs her rest which she rightly deserves.

Every Tamil debate on TV channels has husbands as participants making fun of their wives on the stage just for the ripples it creates among the audience and the thunderous applause. There was one participant who recalled how women sport all kinds of reptiles, from snakes to crocodiles on their foreheads, in the form of colorful bindhis! When the participant recalled how even married women have taken up the to the comforts of using sticker bindhis which find resting places every where in the house from fridge to tv, it drew a deafening applause from the entire audience including women!

Those times married women aka home makers had all the time keeping a big round bindi using turmeric based kumkum and unmarried women used liquid kumkum.. But still the sweat, wind and heat played havoc with the entire forehead smearing it with red kumkum, making women look more like a fierce goddess Kali. With the present generation of working women, many having got to run behind buses which do not stop at their respective bus stops, they can’t present themselves at their offices with a sweaty forehead smeared with Gopuram mark kumkum!

Another grouse against women is their dress which do not reflect the Tamil culture. Imagine running fast like a PT Usha in a Saree behind a speeding bus or even try stepping on the footboard, the steps which resemble steep Tirupathi temple steps, with some one ahead stepping on your Saree and some one behind pulling your pallu and you caught in the middle for dear life, when you can just feel a human hand! For avoiding such nasty experiences many prefer the comforts of Churidar and the younger ones have taken up to jeans and T shirts. Can any male climb up in to crowded bus with his veshti intact. Just try it for once,
The other grievance against women is their indecent dress sense which they find it as attention catching gimmick and thus the main reason for rapes which occur throughout our country. If dress is the reason what could be the cause of the rape of an 80 year old lady or a 2 month old child? The dress or the permissive male attitude?

All the men folks out there, don’t be jealous of women who think, talk and act logically. Those gaanaa film songs which engages the most offensive language against women may be liked by millions but women out there are deadly against such abusive language which demeans them. So all young men species, stop acting like heroes, and start setting goals for your future by not keeping arrears in your subjects and focus your energy on updating your knowledge rather than dating girls. Women may speak good English, earn lakhs, wear the fashionable dresses and drink in a pub but instead of making fun of the modern women, emulate her courage, confidence,,assertiveness and self education which dares her fly to higher and higher levels! Meet her at her own levels academically and culturally rather then putting hate women tags on FB!

You are right. Men want liberal GFs but conservative, traditional wives who won't even look at other men. How many matrimonial ads seek "home loving" (whatever it means) wives. iWe reek of double standards. But the image of the bindi sporting woman in saris is slowly fading for good. That kind of appearance is hardly conducive for working women who have to struggle to get into public transport amid pushing and shoving.

The modern woman is expected to be smart and humble, strong but feminine, tough yet yielding, assertive and docile, well earning but financially dependent, educated and unauthoritative..This is the expectation of almost all male members.

Some type of inferiority develops in men when they think about women who had surpassed them in career.
But I don't think they bother about the way women dress these days.Choodidars and pants have become so common these days and nobody in the family including the great grand oldma expects the vadhu in manjal and kunkum. In fact grandmas who were in madisar 15years ago are having a close hair cut and are seen in jeens and T shirts and they are the most fashioanble ones.

Recently There was an article by a lady heading the HR dept of a leading corporate house. She had expressed an opinion that women who have reached a top position in the official cadre, are unable to do full justice to their efficiency once they get married. After returning from maternity leave their thoughts revolve around the baby and they are unable to either lead a team or give active participation.
The HR head expressed her concern in recruiting women of child bearing age to any key post of decision making nature.'While showing consideration for women, the objective goal and profit shd not be lost sight of,she told the press. While downsizing is enforced, women become the victims.

Men say that women of the same cadre are shown excessive considerations and are paid the same for half of the turn over as men do and further it is a lamentation of reality and not an outburst of jealousy'.
There have been ever so many articles on the status of women and treatment meted out to them.
There is a thin line of demarcation between being negligent in duty and being worried about the health of the baby .In the same way when men express their opinion ,it is their feeling and all men cannot be stated to be envious of women.

When there are social changes that are taking place, these topics do arise.Especially after Nirbhaya was raped three years back, thousands of articles have been published on women empowerment, deep rooted patriarchy, challenges faced by women. There have been equal outcry from men how they are treated as second rate and that law always favours women and that women are exploiting men taking advantage of the legal favour.
When are we going to have a balance?

    Dear Balajee,

In fact many men look for good looking, home loving and professionally qualified working women, the most unrealistic combination. Having grown up in a conservative family , I had great difficulties, wearing a Saree and trying to reach the college amid peak hour rush. Now things have changed but still men would like to see a Mahalakshmii like woman!
