Jaishree, to go whole hog on vegetarianism, one has to be either nuts or Maneka Gandhi or both. I am sure no one except Maneka Gandhi is Maneka Gandhi and very few of us are that much nuts.

Hi...That was a real nice post. I eat most of the meats that we Indians do, but i guess i'm a vegetarian too 'cause when you look at it with a world wide perspective, i may be eating about 2-3% of the kinds of meats that are eaten all over the world. To those vegetarians who eat eggs..here's a question for you....have you eaten fish eggs? They are tastier than chicken eggs. Last edited by csw; 24th May 2008 at 02:57 AM.

Hey! mention of fish eggs made may mouth water! There is nothing like a pure vegetarian. We all consume animal products to a small or large extent. And there is no pure non-vegetarian (even Kamalji, I suspect eats veggies!!). Even if they are there, they are indirect vegetarians since the animals and birds they consume eat grass and other kinds of veggie fodder.

hi Balajee sir, i had never thought that i would see the day that i would come across a "convert/non-convert" vegetarian. you see sir, since birth i too was a vegetarian, but not the 'oh-so-strict-vegetarian' until i couldnt take onions, garlic or eggs. the reason why i was a vegetarian was not due to me being a brahmin or whatsoever. it all started because my grandpa and grandma grew up in a Ramakrishna ashramam, where i presume that all the children were probably taught to abstain from meat.(i'm sorry if i've got this fact wrong). so that brings me to the third generation since my father too believes in remaining a vegetarian. as a child i used to wonder what was it like not to be a vegetarian. and oh, did i mention, my mom was not a vegetarian prior to marrying my dad. so, it was from her that i got to know what it was like. but thankfully my mom neither glamourized being a meat-eater, nor did she de-glamourize vegetarianism (based on her background, im quite surprised of that). therefore, i never questioned my being a vegetarian. i just accepted as it is...and then came along my brother; he was a curious one alright. so he used to ask alot of questions as why were we vegetarians and all. and soon enough, he was the first in my dad's side of the family to break the tradition. and then my mother 'joined' my brother so that he would not be the only one who is a non-veg. it was during these times that my brother used to try and tempt me very much telling how much i was missing out. as for me, i thought if i was going to 'convert', why not do it when i was 18? after all that is the legal age isnt it? well...it has been more than a year being a non-vegetarian now. and i can definitely say that i'm loving it, but minus the icky business of cooking though. i still cant stand the thought of handling the uncooked meat and all even though im quite ok with biology version of dissecting animals. but lets not go towards that direction seeing that this topic is on food matter. anyway, thanks for bring up this topic. a good one indeed. cheers maya

Maya lot of Indian non-vegs cant bear to see meat as meat, They got to disguise it soak it in masals, drown it in gravies or reduce it to Kebabs to eat it. How many Indians can eat a rare steak? Your predicament is similar. .

Same is the problem with me. I love fish but I can't bear to see fish being cooked. My daughter, who loves omelettes can't tolerate the smell of eggs being cooked. We are all a bunch of paradoxes aren't we?

Kanaka, sorry to shock you but Cheese need not be veg. It depends on what sort of curdling agent was used. Many cheeses including the famous Kraft are made with calf rennet as curdling cheese. Same is the case with several swiss cheeses. If you are dogmatically vegetarian do check the curdling agent before consuming the cheese. Otherwise if you are pragmatic like me (as I said in the post, anything in which meat is not visible is vegetarian for me) sit back and enjoy your cheese.
