| This is the story in many household and the same holds true in mine too. my mil just likes your mom will not touch veg taken from under the ground on ammavasai days, no onions /garlic on many days etc, but will eat (not seen) eggs in cakes (and every time she does that my hubby will give sarcastic comments too) and codliver capsules for health etc. having said all that, i call my household vegetarian |

| Hi Balajee, That was too good. My standard phrase to all " i am a veg, dairy products okay, no meat or fish" pretty long but works for me. Now what do you call the people who have all the simulated meat( made out of soy products) . Would they be pseudo non vegetarians? Or lets come up with a better name for them. keep writing. | Balajee welcome to IL ! Being a pucca non veg myself I visited China to buy some machinery for my factory. My hosts treated me to dinner and brought in several items. One of them tasted different from what i was used to. When I asked the host he said it was 'snake'. Oh well (Like they say it tasted like chicken) Santosh |

| Hi Balajee, Very nice article. I am a vegetarian who will eat eggs, dairy but no meat (red or white) or fish. Of course I had the same upbringing as yours... egg and cod liver oil were medicine. But I was scolded when ,at the age of 5, I innocently ate some chicken gravy that my 7 year old neighbour offered!!!! I did not know that about sugar... bleached with animal bones!! This vegetarianism practised by us is probably hypocrisy ... well why then do we covet leather shoes, belts and sofas and recliners? leather may be a by-product of the beef industry but still.. animal product. For some time I stayed away from flavoured yogurt as they had gelatin in them... but I like them too much so I overlook it. Despite all this I will remain a vegetarian (same conditions as you mentioned if I do not see animal-product it is not there) as I do not believe in the wilful killing of animals... there are vegetables in plenty... Or am I a vegetarian not because I love animals, but 'coz I hate vegetables!! Gayathri Last edited by GayathriSundar; 19th May 2008 at 01:32 PM. |

| Ha ha ha....I totally understand where you come from. I LOVE cakes and cookies and I always pretend they don't have eggs! However, an omelette looks unpalatable for some reason. But I always call myself a vegetarian, unashamedly hypocritical ![]() I'm fairly sure I've may have had "Basil Tofu" cooked in chicken broth in Chinese/Thai restaurants or French fries with lard in it and no longer deserve the veggie tag. However, I still call myself so just to bemuse my Chinese co-workers. They always surround me during the lunch hour, gape at my box and go " No meat?? Where's the protein? Where's nutrition? Where's the meaning of your life??? " They finish by asserting I live like a "monk". Makes my day, in a weird sort of way ![]() Have a nice day -Bee |

| Hi Balajee, Enjoyed reading your funny post. Thanks! I am also a vegetarian (Yes, for dairy products and a big No for egg, or meat). I always check the ingredients and if it has any meat or egg yolk, I don't buy it. My kids and my husband eat cakes. I don't restrict them, but I don't eat. I do not buy any products that has eggs. Some friends think that I am crazy, but I don't care!

| Balajee, what a nice post! Made a good read - ofcourse I am a vegetarian and love being one That apart, while living in Turkey almost 10years ago, had some of my husbands' colleagues for dinner and while everyone mumbled sincere thanks (imagine cooking vegetarian non Indian food by a newly married bride!) and pretended to enjoy the food, one person was brave enough to excuse himself and say "I need meat, let me go around the corner, eat from a kebab and be back". To this day, I still smile thinking about him when faced with the question of veg/non veg.. |
