Oh yes, it does feel monotonous without any conversation. But I believe If speech is silver, silence is golden.

I love driving. So when we go out, it is a bit of a " I'll drive, no I will"...

I win most of the time....

nice post. We have also had similar, not as bad though experience with our drivers and my husband tavels quite a bit and guess what has forced me to learn to drive the haggling with auto driver to pick up and drop my son to his classes hope i get on well with my driving and get saved from haggling and walking half the distance in the process and end up paying the full distance fare for the half distance and my son's constant nagging thats why I want to you to learn to drive all through and when you just think all is over when you get down and pay the agreed fare he says you never said you have to turn one street more or some such stupid statment you blood boils and you just start to fight and it takes hours to just get back to your calm self. here I haveto say that there are some good auto drivers too and I promtly take their phone numbers.
I guess I have strayed from the actual issu of driving

Uma, I don't need to learn driving. When my wife is not available for driving I take a bus. Yes my sympathies to you as far as auto drivers in Chennai are concerned. The whole lot of them are villains. They never switch on the meters and charge as they like.
