Jan 30-The day, Mahathma gandhi,who lived for TRUTH and NON-VIOLENCE was brutally assassinated.
My Dear truth? Where have you disppeared?
Lies-Lies-Lies everywhere.
There are white lies,the least serious ,told just for escapism;
There are broken promises;
Fabricated lies to damage the reputation of others;
Exaggerated lies to win favour or harm others;
Lying with the the main intention to cheat;

Plagiarism by writers'Compulsive liars who make it a point only to lie, even telling truth is easier.
The reality today:-

We parents make our children believe that there is a fine line between telling the truth and hurting the people.
We never fail to quote the upanishad vakyam
"Satyam brooyath, priyam brooyath,
na bruyath sathyam apriyam"
( Speak the truth;Speak affectionately.Never tell the truth, if it is not comfortable or affectionate)
Children are brought up among lies and unmixed lies.It is normally said that a child will never lie. But psychologist say that all kids, without exception start telling lies at

the age of two and lying plays a positive role in child development and that lying develops individual thought process and emotional control.

But sometimes truth has to be concealed- a shocking news to the weak hearted and the like. If we keep silent, the noble quality of silence itself becomes another form of lie.
Normally lies are described as sugar coated capsules to convey bitter truths.

But poets, dramatists,, fiction writers belong to the category of harmless liars that have social acceptance.Those lies have entertainment and aesthetic value.
What to talk of politicians and their election promises-nothing but lies wrapped in pretty packings?
Are we not aware of medical practitoners giving false hopes to terminally ill patients and extracting lakhs only to convey God's will?
Legal experts' lies belong to a specially classified'technically true' category.Unfortunately there is no dearth of oaths to ''speak the trurh, the whole truth and nothing but truth'
There are fraudsters in education, marketing ,religion and among so called godmen too.

The business world cannot function without lies..,In their dictionary truth and integrity have altogether different meanings. Lying produces results; whether bolstering a personal credential or developing a sales pitch– business people lie because it works– lying in business is the rule; and not the exception,though they know fully well that lying is unethical, immoral, even criminal,.it becomes a useful ‘tool’.

Some people lie to avoid conflict,some to save face,some to market their products( even financial product.) In Real estate business they withhold significant informations not favouring the clients,

According to a survey,both men and women lie in approximately a fifth of their social exchanges lasting 10 or more minutes; over the course of a week they deceive about 30% of those with whom they interact one-on-one.
…Perhaps some businesses would collapse under the weight of relentless honesty, with unveiled truths destroying the ability to connect with others..

. This means that, when you lie, you must be comfortable telling the lie to everyone, and moreover, you must act as if the lie was true. There’s a saying in creative writing, which is most often applied to poets, and it says; the bad ones borrow and the good ones steal… and, a similar rule applies to lying in business; steal but don’t borrow… If you’re going to lie about something, then you must be prepared to continue lying about it for ever… that means if you’re going to use a lie– you must own it

When a business over-performs, it runs the risk of raising expectations for future years, when it under-performs, it runs the risk of the share price being devalued, and people’s jobs also might be at risk… Hence, a business common practice is to release provision in a bad year to bolster the bottom-line, or take bad news in a good year to manage down profits… but are these practices really lies? Universally accepted lies become truths.

We have heard a story of a butcher entering the hermitage in search of a cow.
" Did you see my cow?'-the butcher
The sage , if says 'yes, the butcher would kill the cow.
The butcher" Pl tell me what you saw with your eyes.
Sage_" eyes can only see and cannot speak."
Butcher:-" then speak with your tongue"
Sage" But my tongue cannot see.
"That which sees cannot speak and that which speaks cannot see",repeated the sage.

The butcher went away murmuring" I don't understand his philosophy'
The cow was saved by not revealing the truth.
In Tamil there are two clear expressions;
UNMAI-to say what we see.
Vaaimai-to analyse what we see with our mind and convey which is not harmful"
Thiruvalluvar has composed ten couplets on" Vaaimai"

What the hermit said belonged to this category.

It’s better than being fully honest; after all, honesty without compassion is cruelty.

If a person is asked 'what’s a lie and what is not' most people would probably answer– ‘it depends’…
Perhaps ‘the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth’ has become a relic of a bygone era. There is no absolute truth except the truth that there is no absolute truth.

Even if Gandhi is alive he may again say " Sathyameva Jayate" but add ",the satyam having undergone total metamorphosis and redefined in toto"

Dear Jaya,
I wonder there will be anyone in this world who has never spoken a lie. We can only segregate lies as harmless ones spoken with good intention or lies which damage the life or reputation of a person.

Translation for those who doesn't know Tamil.

Thiruvalluvar has said that if a lie can do some good without any damage there is no harm in telling a lie instead of truth.

But alas! Lawyers, doctors, business people and politicians speak only lies at most of the times. There might be rare exceptions in a miniscule percentage.

Dear Pushpa,
What you said is 100% true. There is no absolute truth.There are harmful lies and harmless
As we are accustomed to corruption, we have to get acclamatised to untruth.What cannot be cured should be endured.

Jayasala 42.
