Default Selling Point

I just watched an advertisement where a woman (Talk show Kelly Ripa) after a busy day at work rushes home and whips up dinner for a gathering for 50 or so people, handles her kids who have come to sleep at her house baking everything they need and also goes out to the yard dirties herself. They were selling the great looking Oven cum Microwave cum cooking range. But they showed more of this gorgeous woman and less of the features of the grand looking cooking range. They did proceed to show the wonderful dishes that can be cooked in it but they still did not show much of the cooking range. So I timed it. For 3 minutes of time they showed the cooking range for ONLY a meager 30 seconds. So I did wonder what where they selling? The concept that if I buy the expensive looking cooking range I too can cook for 50 people.? But more importantly will I look as good as this model cooking ? I think for me that’s the question to ask. There’s no way that I can ever rush from work and then finish this amount of cooking and then play with the kids and all the time looking beautiful! Not on this world is it going to happen. But if its possible when I buy this cooking range then I am tempted. So did they try to sell me a concept or a product?
Yesterday we were all watching a sports show when during the advertisement break onto the screen came this truly gorgeous model. Once she appeared she stayed for almost 3 minutes. (I know bec I timed her). Then after she was done walking and jumping on the screen showing her graceful self, in moved a CAR. (Volvo). And the car moved out and some feature popped in about the car but SHE stayed on. After the commercial was over I forgot the name of the car so asked my hubby watching and he asked me “What CAR”?. So I said you know the one where that model came and stood and walked etc.. Oh I didn’t see any car was his very cool reply. I understand. I too was mesmerized at her slimness and her agility and her slimness (have to repeat!). But isn’t the point lost that no one remembers the product that much. Atleast in the unofficial poll I took with 1 man, meaning my hubby, I could easily see no attention was paid to the product in this case the CAR. So what are these people selling? Or has things changed so much today that they spend more money and time with focus on the model rather than model the product?

AC,

That was one rip roaring piece gal. i saw the Electrolux ad too.. and I was drooling....... over the appliances. Oh well , but yes, most of the ads, tend to focus more on women than the stuff they are selling. Women and cars?? There's this other ad with 4 women selling a car. can't recall which one that is. But ofcourse all the models are slimmer than slim!! You can add my DH to your polling too , and he will come up with " what car " too. May be we can get back to them . Next time we see a gorgeous hunk selling the latest High def stuff!!

Hi AnandChithra,

Nice topic !

Just yesterday, I was discussing this ad with my hubby. Kelly Rippa, the talk show host, does not know how to cook in real life. She has openly admitted this many times in the show. So, all we see is a facade and a fake demonstration of already cooked items (sure you would know this)

When I was seeing this commercial, ( I do have a four burner electric cooking range with a ceramic glass top ) , I was thinking of my state in the morning..with tava on one burner for making dosas, sambar in the other, lemon rice/pulav rice for my kids' lunch box, trying to fit in some other item on the back burner .

Was wondering what would happen if I just boil a big pan of water in the morning !

Meanwhile, children yet to decide whether to have bread toast/cereal/dosas for breakfast !! I cannot picture myself being so cool, calm & composed in the morning rush !

AC, Kelly rippa has her house keeper or her hubby to take care of everything while she comes immaculately dressed for her talk show.

So," kannaal paarpedhellam poi, theera vijaarippadhe mei" ( Appearances are Deceptive) .

And you are absolutely right...women are made the commodity for selling any product..many times, doubts do arise as to what they are trying to sell here !

That is the sorry state of affairs !

Cheers
Krithika

Dear Krithika
nice reading ur reply... Now my son wants me to keep the kitchen as they show in T.V ? For me its not possible.. as long as they dont ask me to "look" like a t.v. woman.. To me its sad that the focus is shifted to these women and some other factors are selling today!

AC,
Don't you realise that -- atleast they might remember the model and connect them with the product.....sales trick...
in other words, exploiting our weaknesses in general...

nice seeing sundari's picture regarding the 'family car'..
as krithika has pointed out where in the world we have time, with so many jobs to do in the morning., to be neat ourselves and also a clean kitchen at that time..
I cannot ask my hubby because, nowadays he doesn't watch any TV prog....maybe my children???

Dear Bhargavi
So rightly said... I am surprised there are not that many responses other than Sundaris'.. maybe in India they dont exploit women and models as selling points?? what do you think??????
