| The cool dosa summer.…. Kids have come home for summer hols. My BIL’s triplets my SIL’s sons cousin BIL’s daughters gsons and gdaughters. The whole place is pretty noisy and they are having fun like no where else. Running up and down the stairs. Eating mangoes raw with chillie powder and salt. The gooseberry tree is still bearing fruits….the leftover this season. Pretty huge ones the kids go crunch crunch crunch. Chasing squirrels and catapulting monkeys chasing them from their raw mango eats is fun for the kids. Waking them up is quite tiresome. The girls narmada nandhita and nivedita are somewhat fast to open the door at five a.m when we call them and they promptly go back to sleep. The tanks are empty every now and then what with all of them having a go at the open water fall (????) the tap fixed a little high in the open. Splashing water all over. Luckily the water table is fine and the well is full. Preparing breakfast lunch and dinner is another long story the brunch and mid brunch more fun and will run like a mega serial. They love tiffin items and take their time coming for lunch. They eat their breakfast heavy and for lunch will either skip it or come in one by one. They have to be lured in with a carrot before the cart…like icecream in the evening … a visit to the tank..a boatride…. Sometimes a visit to the temple (all you elders say you are taking us out for entertainment and end up in a temple…!!!!!) a movie or two.. the TV is always blaring with one movie or other or cricket matches…the girls for the movies and the boys for cricket…tough time to get caught as the one who decides who should view what ….. luckily the girls are somewhat easy to lure away… So what will it be for breakfast? Oh mami or perims or chithi (no calling me patti although I am graying what with my sons yet to be married…!!!) we shall have dosa their favourite…!! Dosa for all? You think I shall be in the kitchen all day making dosas no way. How about your favourite pola pola upmav? They look astonished …we don’t like it any more…don’t ever mention pongal my mom always makes it.. yech and don’t make idlis that’s usual for breakfast… whoever wants adai…they make it with all the dhalls and no way…pooris ok how about making them?.....i felt like giving them a spanking they are a little grown up for that…me making pooris in this hot weather? And they will want kurma or potato curry and chutney…and in any case I cant do it everyday. The children always continue with this kind of selection for night dinner too…. The dosa being their favourite….the triplets are in the learning spree learning to make the different chutneys so they did offer to make the dosas for everyone… The natural, cool cool stuff sure finds a place in the kitchen and here are some we tried out this summer. The vendaya dosa… the usual dosa with a handful of fenugreek seeds soaked and ground fine. The vendakka dosa… to three parts of rice (I use hand pound rice …u can use boiled rice if you don’t use hand pound brown rice) add three fourth cup black urud dhall and let it soak for about six hours. Wash about ten ladies finger .cut and keep aside. Grind the batter and when almost done add ladies finger grind fine. Make dosa after about two hours. The white pumpkin dosa: to three parts of rice add one part of black urud dhall and a little fenugreek seeds, and one keethu (a slice ) of white pumkin…cut it and add to batter. If you have to make this dosa immediately add one or two tomatoes ground fine to the mix. The cucumber dosa: to three parts of rice add one part black urud dhall and little fenugreek seeds add cucumber slices in the end to make batter. The aloe vera dosa: yech…!! Aloe vera cheeee kathazhai natham they said….but it was added and the choice was given for them to choose between dosa and upmav and they opted for the dosa. There will be no bad smell if the aloe vera is added fresh and kept in the fridge when not in use. To three parts rice add one part black urud dhall and one leaf of aloe vera (just remove the prickly thorn like projections and add with the green peel) The coconut dosa the kids loved this dosa with coconut scraping added to the batter. Or added to grinding dosa. The tender coconut dosa: to three parts rice add one part black urud dhall and a little fenugreek seeds add one cup of tender coconut water while grinding. All these cool cool dosas and we are trying out more. Any more ideas for cool dosa summer? sathya |

| Hi Sathya, Good innovative dosas here. I remember once all my cousins had come down for the holidays altogether 13 of us at home and my poor mom one day she made dosa on our farmaish and by the time the last person had food the first one was hungry again ![]() You should try some gujju snacks like theplas, rawa dhoklas (instant), and others tomato omlette, baked beans with toast or augratin etc. |
