| Recently my friends Dharma and Shankar visited her mothers place. Of all the things Shankar could remember back from his trip was how he could not sleep well. His mother-inlaw being quite orthodox had to clean the whole house by 6a.m especially with phenyl (hope the spelling is right?) ! And because of what he called "the smell" he lost his sleep. And when he tried to sleep during the day he said there was this incessant ringing of the calling bells. It just rang continously. At one point in time he got so frustrated that he removed the battery from the bell. This sleep disturbance is becoming quite a common thing. Everyone these days are getting very picky. Me .. I have to have the t.v switched off in the house. I know thats unfair but thats me. Some of my friends cannot stand their husbands snoring. Some cannot stand it if someone gets up in the night to goto the bathroom. I have this doctor couple who have seperate bedrooms because one of them is on call they do not want the spouse to be disturbed with telephone ringing. Recently my bil told me that bedrooms are having a section built as sound proof. So one can sleep better I think. Why is it becoming more difficult to sleep these days. So does anyone have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or does the door bell ringing not bother you or the phenyl smell not rouse you from sleep??! Share your sleep deprived or not stories here! |

| Dear AC I am happy that you have raised a very critical issue that touches everyone's life. Sleep deprivation is a very serious thing and the problem assumes gigantic proportion if the members of the same family need different ambience to be able to sleep. One may get sleep only if the room is dimly lit while the second member can get sleep only if the room is darker than hell! Some may require some kind of noise like an overhead fan in the background while another cant close the eyes if there is a sound of even ants moving on the wall or the mating sound of mosquitoes. Family harmony is all about being able to sink the personal preferences and evolve a common code of sleeping. The problem with sleep is that it strikes you at the most inconvenient times. I remember a couple of episodes of Mr.Bean. In one episode, he finds it awfully difficult to keep awake during a church sermon. In another, he is unable to fall asleep at home despite trying various tricks. He finally settles down for counting the sheep but loses count every time! Finally he handles it with a calculator in hand! I too have a problem. I cant sleep when others are sleeping! Let us hear what others have to say! Sri

| Dear Anandchithra, The smell of phenyl for me is very nice .GIves me mental satisfaction that the floor is spic and span. The doorbell well in my house all the morning wakers know that they SHOULD NOT ring the bell. Anyway we are early risers so theres not much prob except that I do not wish my daughter to get up. I switch off the bell to the first floor till my daughter wakes up. As for me AC I do not sleep till I am very sleepy and then I do not mind any noise. The Disturbed sleep syndrome is common I guess when you try to sleep just because you think its time while your body isnt ready for it. Reading before bedtime helps ,also hot chocolate. Good exercise regime at daytime gives good sleep at night. Oh yes I have heard these sound proof rooms but I personally wouldnt want one . There are kids at home and there might be emergencies and I wouldnt be wanting to sleep like a log at those times. Love, Devika

| Dear AC, nice thread, i think most of us never get the deep sleep any more, the mind is too active running a commentary all the time, wish it could pass on its energy into my physical too, so i can work out and then slump down, i toss and turn most times, and i hate summer as it is too hot even after a good shower, i can never stand the AC in the room as it dries away my throat no end. when my husband was there he used to read a lot till sometime 2pm i would have my eye guard and try to sleep a little then his snoring would keep me awake till morning so never had a great sleep in the early days of life. its nearing 30 yrs god's gift to me of loosing hearing so very convenient whenever i am in deep sleep i remove the aid and use an eye guard to dissuade the light and my children could blow away at high level of tv and strike lightening inside and i would not be aware... even without all these it is getting tough to sleep and i am happy to be an early riser, to be at peace with no sound around except for the chirping s which is very high in the morning.. calling bells are remote as my fluffy is in guard telling me if someone wants, its usually the courier guy who turn up at odd hours of 1to 2 p.m. just as u siesta. phenyl gives me a great clean feeling i have always loved the lemon flavoured ones they are a lot fresher in smell and surrounding..sunkan

This seems to be the trend these days.. I am not sure if this is a reflection of our times or the stress levels of today! Even children are not getting enough sleep. Stictly my opinion. I have to coax my son to sleep a little more on weekends because the weekdays are crammed with school and school related activities. Then weekends are also crammed with studying test prep etc. and he's only in the 8th. I shudder what would become later on in school and college. The school system is more demanding these days and parents are sometimes demanding too... I have yet to see that movie of Mr.Bean but will certainly do so. Only Mr.Bean the actor can portray a tricky situation as humor and fun:) I have also seen a gadget sold in shops for sleep aid. It can either hum like a fountain or a waterfall whatever you chose the option as! Nowadays when I hear of these sleep deprived stories I realise I should be grateful to God for blessing me with the life elixir:) |

Thats a nice technique to switch off the calling bell till the chikd wakes up. Looking at the cute picture she certainly needs her beauty sleep, the little princess:) I personally feel one should remain active during the day and good diet and exercise helps in this. For my husband the hot choclate helps. And books help even more. The moment he opens a book to read while in bed the next second he's fast asleep. Really !!!!! Maybe that's a technique to be tried and tested and even patented:) |

| Dear Chitu sis “Meenkutty why did u come here? Better go n sleep now.” I know this is what is running in your mind now. Now pls don’t think i have saved you from the work of writing a fb to me. You have got an additional work of thinking n writing something different from that i have written above. ![]() Interesting thread! I came to know later that she had been yelling at the other end for nearly three minutes n i thought i was hearing her voice in my dream. She dropped the call finally knowing that she won’t be hearing anything from my side other than the sound of the ceiling fan in my room. It happens very often. Either i don’t hear the ring tone or even if i hear, i feel its happening in my dream. I have acquired ‘Phonoringophobia’ i guess. Sometimes i do feel like its 7 A.M n its getting late for me to get ready for college. When i get up hurriedly with the same feel, i realize its 4 P.M n not early morning. Only this feel can wake me up. You may think, i sleep during day time only when i am at home. The sleep i experience is even sweeter, deep, and sound when i am at college. What else can be expected after a lunch n that too when it is curd rice with maa vadu, serious lectures are like lullabies for us! But then i am nocturnal like roaches. Even if i skip my afternoon nap i find it very hard to get to sleep before 2 A.M. Hearing to songs, reading books all this doesn't help. ‘Early to bed n Early to rise’ has gone out of my dictionary! ![]() But then its a nice different feel to get into sleep after hearing the calls of crows n seeing the milk van arriving by 2.30 or 3 in the morning! Love Meena
