[TD] Very often we senior citizens worry about our 'forgetfulness' associating the same with some major ailment as alzimers or dementia.

But our entire life is full of unforgetful events of forgetfulness. Some admit their weakness. Some are overcareful. They concentrate on pulling the locks without verifying whether the padlock is held in position.. Many forget the scooter keys or search for their mobiles which will be hiding behind the book shelf or sofa cushion or even inside the washing machine raising feeble sounds. Some note down things or put a knot in the kerchief but eventually forget where they have noted down or for what purpose they have placed the knot.

Even people who occupy very high positions suffer from this malady and their secretaries act as their second brain as 'intel inside'.
But actually forgetting is a blessing and god given gift.

It is not easy to forget the wrongs done by others or humiliation or insults heaped on us or forget 'I' to relate ourselves to God as preached by Sage Ramana.

We have to remember that it is very crucial to release the old stock of inf that has outlived its relevance .Forgetting is an important process of learning.Sometimes what we forget assumes greater significance than what we remember.

Forgetting has its own advantages.wantonly forgetting about a marriage invitation may save you a few hundreds as gifts.
Being branded as ' marathi mannarswami' you may escape certain responsibilities.
Forgetting to lock the door may prove a blessing to burglars.

Our brain has a built in programme of forgetting'.It acts a winnower constantly evaluating, editing and sorting various informations and deletes many things in a far more greater speed than our computers. This sieving process is what we call 'forgetting'.If this does not happen we will be brooding over past failures and weeping over deaths for ever..

Be happy with what little you remember and this free mind will help us retain more.

After all there is a thin line of demarcation between 'remembering' and 'forgetting'.
    REMEMBERING IS FORGETTING TO FORGET.
    FORGETTING IS REMEMBERING TO FORGET.
Though this may look like a Tamil cine dialogue, by Visu,it is really an expression of forgetfulness in terms of remembering and vice versa.Don't you agree?

    Totally agree, Jayasala .

And Visu has a point there .

Without the boon of forgetfulness, we will be doomed to get crushed under the weight of memories, good and bad. The healthy brain is preprogramed to take care of our mental health .
Without forgetting and forging agead, there is no progress.
If something remains unforgettable, ( as in AmmaJayalalitha's favourite phrase : "marakka mudiyaatha marana adi ! ") the least we can do is to filter it to gather some life lessons and discard the bitter residues.

Happiness is ......Filter Kaapi ! :)

    Dear Mrs Jayasala,

Even though forgetting to remember and remembering to forget appear to be one and the same, when we forget to remember, we face problems in life whereas when we remember to forget, the life becomes pleasant. We associate remember with gratitude and forget with unpleasant experiences.

But both forgetting and remembering happen in our forgetfulness state. When we are in awareness state, there is nothing to remember or forget.

    Dear Viswa,
I just wrote in lighten vein to suggest that one need not get panicky about their forgetfulness.Thank you for the wonderful research.

Very often we are advised to be A WINNOW AND NOT A SIEVE.

A sieve allows all good things to pass through its pores while retaining the waste.
The winnow on the contrary discards the husk , dust and chaff and retains only the good and useful things.
What I wanted to say is that we need an ideal balance between remembering and forgetting. An ability to remember everything is as much a curse as an inability to
remember.Intelligence, our most priced possession ,depends on our ability to disregard, or forget the details that are no longer essential.A prodigious photographic memory renders its possessor incapable of intelligent thinking.
Another important theological or moral analogue of forgetting is FORGIVING.By forgetting the undeserved bad treatment or humiliations , we rise to a higher plane.
If one does not let go of the past undesirable things,it starts polluting the present. Dissatisfaction with the past creates distaste towards the present and bringing about a distrust for the future too.
It all depends whether we allow our lower self or higher self to direct our mind.
