Dog – Man’s Best Friend
Man is the worst animal – by a long way. Reason: we have something called “Ability to Think” and the “Power of Speech.” Yet, man does not always think properly nor does he use his speech to talk well to others.
You give a dog food – even a small biscuit – it will wag its tail the next time it sees you. Not that it expects you to give it food again. A pat will also make it happy. We have a dog in our Society in Mumbai. Most of the members give it food, some just pat it. Yet it takes very good care of our Society and raises an alarm when any unknown person comes. When my husband goes to office in his motorized wheelchair, it goes with him till the gate. When he returns in the evening, it waits with a wagging tail till he parks his wheelchair and comes inside. The members have taken such a linking for the dog that they even gave it medical treatment when it was ill recently.
I read recently in a magazine about Pet Therapy. A foundation named Angel have About 20 trained dogs like Labradors, great danes, cocker spaniels & golden retrievers. A playful dog spends time with a autistic child and the child becomes calmer and sharpens his motor skills. Alzheimer patients enjoy playing ball with the dog and merely brush its hair. Research has shown that hypertension reduces by patting a dog.
Yet one should be careful about dogs – stray dogs in particular. Municipal authorities should undertake sterilization drives to seen that dog population does not go out of control. Diseased dogs should be put to sleep. We also shouldn’t be cruel to dogs or any other animal. They cannot express pain the way we can; only tears in their eyes tell the story.
The “Boxer” in the Vodafone ad is a prime example of how understanding dogs can be and how they love children. No wonder, Vodafone agreed to keep the same dog brought out by Hutch for its ad.
Remember the Amitabh Bacchan movies of yesteryears? He would call his enemies “Kutte….Kameene” (nowdays the words are more “purified”). What an irony it is to call your enemy your friend. A dog, definitely is the best friend of man.
