The best birthday I ever had.

Every body loves to receive birthday gifts...... I wish to share the best birthday I had till date..... the most memorable one......


When we are kids we are very much excited about our birthdays,as we grow older we get involved in organising our kids birthday's and planning gifts for our spouse,friends etc.

Sometimes it becomes a mere formality to just wake up and give a peck on the cheek to wish Happy birthday. On other occassions a thoughtless gift is given to us formally by someone who knows its our birthday. I remember once I invited all my kids friends to her birthday party. One kid came with two [bronze diyas ] and handed it to my kid saying" amma ,gave this for you". [till date I wonder what would my then 5 year old do with two diyas, anyway..... ]I don't blame the kid but the mother who was so thoughtful,I had given such a beautiful gifts and books to the same kid on her birthdays].


But a few years ago,when I thought I was past the getting presents and wishes phase, I had a very different and memorable birthday. Even now, it brings smiles to my face.

I can never think of my birthdays without beautiful wishes from my family though.But this one gesture from them surpassed all.

We sisters had our seperate lives and were in touch only via phone on birthdays.
It was the eve of my birthday. As usual I came back from work, finished my chores and went to sleep. My younger sis had come back from abroad and was at my Mom's place in the same town as mine.

It was about twelve at midnight.....the doorbell rang, I jumped up in panic,hundreds of thoughts raced my mind then,since I imagined all sorts of things,half asleep,so many unwanted thoughts rushed in just that one moment, who could be ringing the door bell at this unearthly hour.

Just as I opened the door, it was so dark and I could see only a candle.

I narrowed my half asleep eyes to see what was behind the candle,still trembling from opening the door...then I heard loud voices singing "Happy Birthday"

It was my 10 year old niece holding the candle,my elder sis,my kid sister and my Dad all singing at the unearthly hour outside my apartment door. I couldn't believe myself,
I was at my wit's end ,so scared that I shouted at all of them for their enterprise and after I stopped trembling and getting my birthday kisses , I rudely sent them all back saying we will talk tomorrow morning.

Poor things, they left after wishing me.

The next day on my birthday I said sorry to all of them, but explained it was not right on their part to scare me at midnight like that. I added what would my neighbours think if any one heard.

To this my silly sisters laughed and replied that they just wanted my birthday to be different ,so they had forced my ever obliging Dad to walk down with them on the road at midnight,accompanied by barking dogs throughout the time. When they had reached the gate, they had called out to my watchman who was asleep, to open the gates. And he was wondering what in the world are these people upto,but he knew them very well so he did open the gates......

My God, what a day,!phew......

That was one wonderful birthday eh ! With street dogs barking , just imagine their condition, and then waking the watchman.HAHA.I can imagine the scene, u in yr nightie, and all dark and u can see just the candle, half asleep.

It was quite scary at that unearthly hour,I warned them never to repeat such a thing again. It was one hell of a birthday shock[not surprise] actually.

Dear Mithila ma'm ,

Yes, it is so wonderful on their part to celebrate my birthday like this. Of course,very very sweet of my Dad to join the gang. Everytime it brings smiles to my face.

surely the best birthday u must have had....i wud have spent the whole night talking and enjoying with them...love to plan surprises for others but till now no one has done for me...guess i am surrounded by predictable people...

Hi Mindian,

Actually,my poor folks just thought they had scared me too much and went away......the next day I said so many sorries to make up with.. they were all grinning.....since it was my b'day,they didn't say anything. Till date I regret I could have reacted better....

But it was my best day for sure.
