| I have often thought what type of books people tend to read, I have journeyed by trains, bus and flights and most of the time I would look at people and wonder what type of books they would read. Some times I would see the male fraternity reading the newspaper and the look of absorption on their faces would often leave me thinking- “what must be so interesting to them to have such utter fascination with the daily news. It must be the same – murder, scandal, sport etc….”. Sometimes it would be a magazine like India Today or Business Week or some such serious magazine. I have often seen people read books on behavioural matter like – “ How to handle the corporate world” or “ How to become a better manager” books written by authors like – “Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale” or sometimes books with titles like “The art of War”, “Management and failure” etc… These types of books would be more often then not read by some individuals who once you look at them would have you thinking – does he really understand or grasp the seriousness of such a book, no wonder he looks such a boor. And often the male view point of a women’s choice of book is a magazine based on cookery or who’s who of society – Cine blitz or Cosmopolitan or Society or Savvy or Femina etc… and If a female was actually reading something as my husband so often questions me “yenna orru romance bookka?” this makes me wonder do all women read only romance based books??? Hmm serious food for thought. I have a sister who’s interest or rather passion is reading about murder mystery and I must say some of her books are spine chilling and if one has a fantastic imagination I rather say it would leave some sleepless for a few nights. She reads a variety of authors who specialise in murder mystery most often psychological murder mystery. I would think her as crazy. Well food for one must be poison for another in this case. Another sister of mine can hardly abide books let alone suffer to read it. She has not so much has taken a comic book to read. My mother reads authors like Taslima and Books written by Khalil Gibran they often render me speechless as they are so steeped in reality or rather so philosophical by nature and I wonder maybe I do not possess the ability to steep myself in it and it takes more then a few greys in my hair for me to reach out for such a book. My uncle reads a whole variety of them be it a newspaper like Times of India or The Hindu or Wings of fire by APJ Abdul Kalam our beloved ex president or a work of fiction like Colin Forbes, Wilbur Smith all are given equal level of absorption. As for me I must say nothing can hold my interest like a good book having a bit of romance, a touch of mystery and a healthy dose of wit. I also have a natural penchant for Comics like The Archie’s, or The Phantom or even Calvin and Hobbes, Asterix etc – they hold my interest like nothing else. This leaves me sometimes wondering – Can you judge a book by its cover? Sometimes we are not what we seem. As a famous writer had said – “We seldom see others as they are. We often see them as we are.” |

| Dear Aquamarine Great job in getting started..not that i am surprised as i see traces of a well known and talented writer in you ( )You are so right that we should not judge the book by its cover..better to wait and see.. but most often those people who hold what they are reading apparently likes it too..keep writing. |

| Dear Priya, Good topic. Have you noticed the coffee table books in some homes, they only have the most in thing in book as those books. Some people read romance, but they just don't like to discuss it or show that they read it. Have you noticed, the ones who always flaunt certain books, would not have even read a few lines of the same....(my personal opinion from experience..) I am a voracious reader, and am not confined to any genre. I enjoy everything from blood curdling murders, mysteries, non-fiction.....,poetry.... And you cannot judge a person by the books she reads but people tend to do so... ![]()

thank you. Do let me know what are the books that you enjoy, i would so like to get to know you better. I am a voracious reader too and have quite a collection of books, maybe that is why i notice the book the person is holding rather than the person itself. warm wishes aqua. |
