Default Que Sera Sera

When I was a little girl, I asked my Mother what will I be,
Will I be pretty will I be rich ,here's what she said to me,
Que Sera Sera Whatever will be will be ,
The Future's not ours to see
Que Sera Sera What will be will be.

Most of us must be very aware of this piece and might also force a sence of deja'vu as we have sung it at some point of our life. A cute little song with a whole world of meaning.
Whenever I look at Pushpa, I wonder if she would have asked her mother too...
Pushpa , the tiny maid working in my neighbours house a, househelp, a bonsai version of her mother doing the same. Pushpa, meaning flower ..., but hardly have the opportunity to bloom, burdened by responsibilities at a young age, holding a broom ,where she needs to be holding dolls. And as she looks affectionately at the games the other children play, wanting in her heart to be a part of it, but status not permitting it, and the fear of rejection halting the tender steps before it starts.
I sometimes watch her adjusting the toys of the employers kids, taking a long time in getting the toy shelf set and I know shes merely cherishing the opportunity to hold the toys ,longingly looking at it,hoping and genuinely wishing she have them for herself.
I find it very heart breaking to see that kids these age ,struggle so much... at this tender age, begining each day as if the world is on their small shoulder and ending the day with the relief of offloading the weight of it.
I take this opportunity to thank the people who voluntarily come forward to help these kids and help them in experiencing at least some remaining moments of the few years of childhood left.
When ever I celebrate 'Kanjak' during Navratri, I only invite these girls fromthe nearby slum and these househelps. I send special invites to them and look forward to see them on Ashtami day of Navratri. And it is such a beautiful sight to see them on that day . They are dressed in the best way possible ,dark dresses, darker lipsticks and lots of flowers ,giving me the impression that theyve beenup at the first crack of dawn, guess the anticipation of the next day stealing the sleep!!.Theyre are not so much intersted in the 'Halwa Puri' but in the toys, the games, the gifts.I'm sure we all know that kids love toys and we all probably give the used toys etc, to these children You must have all experienced the immense pleasure when you give something to these children, the grin, some toothless, but all shy ,yet thankful
Today I write this because of the fact that we as a community, are strong enough to take the responsilbity of helping in the sponsoring of education of one child and thus bringing a revolution. Pushpa too has the right to learn. Her employer plans to sponsor her education. I plan to sponsor one myself. I guess that is almost like giving birth to a child. I think its very important to educate these kids ,and help them to enjoy their childhood ,its meant for playing and enjoying not for being burdened. One way ti ensure that is to do something for the kids today so that a few years later when Pushpa'c child asks her about her future, Pushpa has something wonderful to offer. Like this:
Que Sera Sera, But i know what you will be,
Your futures designed by me,
From troubles you'll be free
Yes i know you'll be free

Regards,

Devika Menon

Very nicely written Devika!

Hats off to your plan to sponsor a child and also to the employer of Pushpa!
May she achieve great heights and be true to your Que Sera Sera!

Will pray for Pushpa and other children who are losing their childhood 'enjoyment' to get one!

Also planned to do so!

dear devika,
i have seen god give a special gift to the children to dream a lot and that saves any untoward short backs and they go off on a trail of thought looking at those dolls pushpa could be dreaming when i grow up i would own a doll shop kind of stuff, even i have a little girl coming along with her mother, but i have never seen her feel sad or hanging her face, she is always in mischief and smile, that made me realise it is god's gift to every child to tide over its situation and not grieve when young and this becomes a habit, only when they grow and come to realise the materialistic pleasures and its denial then one can see their sadness lingering on their face and always whining and never satisfied kind of feelings, developing in them..sunkan

Yes sunkan,

I do agree that they are gifted with the ability, but then happiness is their birthright,I mean a child is supposed to enjoy this most important phase of life. A lot also depends on the way you treat your help. Probably you are more amiable with the kid , but then all are'nt. Secondly what I wanted to stress is about promoting the education for such kids, for a better tomorrow.

God Bless,

Devika
