My friend and her sister were piercing their noses. I have to initiate everything for myself, nobody would do that at home- so asked the asari to come home too. (Both the families have the same asari ). He brought a gold one and I had the piercing very unceremoniously, much to mom's chagrin.
Then it started giving trouble and the nose began to swell. I tried to treat but in vain. Then I had to take the nose ring off.
During my wedding, my inlaws asked me to pierce again. By that time, my liking ofr nose ring had worn off and I did not want to suffer again. Fil's promise of a diamong one also did not tempt me.
I had a little dream of having diamond studs once I came to Chennai. I had told my hubby that he should get me a pair by the time I turned 40. (My mil has on a very dazzling pair of large thodu- she had a huge face). When she passed away, hubby got me her thodu by giving his brothers their share as money (the elder sil already had and next one did not want then). I was 31 then and so was happy that my dream came true. Hubby bought diamonds only because it was his mother's, otherwise he is against any stone in the gold.
Nowadays I wear the thodu regularly, what is the use of keeping in the locker?
I would like to express my opinion that large nose rings make a lady look older. My friend already looks a little older and she bought a muthunthalukku. But her 6 year old daughter told he that she looks like a grandma when she wears that and so it sleeps in the locker now. | dear varloo,
it is nice to see you here, and this is a traditional topic so i am not surprised about ur presence here, when i got priya the diamond muthunthalukku giri goes mad over her the minute she wears it, it is not the mukkuthi but the base, u need to have an impertinent nose i call it to have it decorated to dazzle the smile, some have it so perfect and a mookkuthi also helps to hide the not so good looking nose that some have, my mother shanthi a bengali wore on both her nose which looked more like nepalese other wise but with the large nose ring which she inherited from her mother in law and she was dark in color the dazzle added to her entire get up, she never walked anywhere without the appropriate dress and accessories and even now when i imagine her it is never without her nose ring, some people have the grt nose for it..keeping in locker is a waste better to exchange the right one...about ur problem is, he must had pierced a nerve, which happens sometime...sunkan

she did not bring any parnaphelia...she asked me to get a new needle with a little thread.....and yes you guessed it..she just pierced me with the needle and tried the thread around. ..(oh my eyes are watering even as i think of it...)
It used to be so painful..and with all the teasing in the class as my nose was swollen....i put my foot down to two sides..thank god for that...
I used to wear a golden nose ring...then mil...she presented me with a diamond one...and I wear that...now... ....I will not be forcing my dd to pierce....it is her wish.......... | dear shanthi,
i feel so sorry for you ma, you are right my second one chitra does not want to have anything to do with nose ring, never force anyone, it is just that in the olden days i remember my mom telling about how my grand mother came decorated from head to foot, from gold nagar raakkudi with rubies hanging from the mouth of the pancha headed snake, and then all her long hair decorated with golden florets, to her ankle with so many varieties of anklets and her hands were with many different types of bangles that was a must in those days, and vanki for her upper arm, and of course the chains with double chain and odiyanum which is the waist belt etc and of course the great mookkutthi on both sides...but poverty strikes who are too well off when in mothers place and she had to pledge all to educate her children, she herself a very intelligent personality i have seen her discussing politics so well, she never shaved her head as per the ritual because she felt she does not have to shave to save herself from being attractive and has a mind of her own...now this independant personality also had a wonderful besthri and muthunthalukku with bullaakku..sunkan

My co-sisters both didn't have one, but the 2nd co-sister did pierce recently alongwith her daughter.
My grand-ma on both the sides, my mother, my mil and atthais,my chitthi all got theirs both sides pierced, my other chitthi, only on one-side and my cousins also on one-side. | dear srini,
the girl who decides to decorate herself will not mind the pain as long as she can have a nice nose ring...so get it done, it is our tradition but never force any if they dont want...sunkan

It really is a fashion today to have many piercings. Recently when we went to have my nieces ears pierced at the mall, they did it so painlessly. A little discomfort for the girl but after reading your stories no trouble at all. |
dear AC,
many here are more professionals the guns work very fast along with the gold earring so it is just a shot like injection and the children have to bear but other wise not the kind of olden days where u use needles and so many other equipments like my mom used the lemon thorn..my god i am amazed at her craziness..sunkan

my father went about searching a groom.. he said he works with a nationalised bank. their demands... the daughter in law wear a diamond nose ring(the earings already taken into account..!)and a fiver as dowry.
now my demands said absolutely no dowry and they will have nothing to do with my piercing MY nose...so out went the alliance.
my dh family everyone wears a nose ring one stone diamond. my mil wore two just like my mom. and they kept telling me it will be so nice if i joined them...no forcing...but.......... i decided quite late..four years after my second son was born...and also said if i wear a nose ring it will be in diamond... so a diamond sridevi mookuthi from dh...the piercing was not all that troublesome as i got it done with the `shot' at a jewellery shop in bangalore...so joined the gang
of mookankayaru pottacha in my family...ahaha

Dear Sunkan,
Very interesting Topic and the title was catchy too...I belong to the Nose pierced and removed gang. When my engagement was fixed , that was on Feb 2006, my mother, maternal &paternal grand mom's and all my relatives insisted that i should have my nose pierced before getting married. Our family is a very orthodox one.So, they all threatned me by saying" mukku kuthikama thali erakudathu".. blah blah..
So i had no choice, my mom and dad took me to GRT, on one condition that i will select the tinest one. They allowed me to select a tiny "pushparagam" nose ring (didnt get a diamond one, coz. for my in laws family- diamond is not rasi).Went to the acharis place near GRT and got my nose pierced.Alas.... what a sheer pain....I got fever that night, so had to gobble up paracetemol tablet along with my night milk.
After my engagement was over, my would be hubby called my house and told straight to me that the nose ring did not suit me at all. I conveyed the same to all my family members, took it as an advantage and removed it saying that..."enga athukararukke pudikala, apram naan yaaru kaga mukkuthi potukanum"..
My mom had no words....heee heee
For my wedding: i duplicated nose ring with Kallupottu...non knew it :) :)
Thanks sunkan, you kindled my memories!!
