Youth And Diwali Share Ur Pranks Here

How mischievous were you in your youth and diwali time:
Please share here whether you never had any fear in bursting crackers,
The large ones bombs and lakshmi vedi and sara vedi and so on…

I was one among my brothers and uncles doing this with great ease,
Going among them and bursting all those aeroplanes which were dangerous in those days, as one flew on to my mom’s eyes and we had to take her for a stitch, it was my brother’s so it is mark from his side to her…

When all was set and dad brought the crackers divided into four and all, I used to pinch one extra pack of lakshmi vedi for me, and my uncle would pinch the sara vedi and so on, but never hesitated to wear an ordinary clothes to burst all morning and evening, those were the days.

Dad used to wait for us to come out with our thundu to give new clothes and he would apply the chandanam and kumkumam and after you pranam him u get the new clothes and change and hurry outside as it is still dark to make the most and keep the first vedi on the road.

Poor thing mom used to be busy making idli and vada and sambhar and all, we got to eat that yuck legiyam stuff, otherwise no sweets, so the new clothes rustling through and running with all our crackers in the pavadai run over make a place so no one pinches from you..

When I married I was adamant I wanted plenty of vedi’s and my husband was very scared to burst, he has never done this and in the whole street I was busy bursting and our alsation dog tiger and my husband locked themselves in the bedroom, funny it was then Now I did not want my children to be so, I showed them how to do it, let me tell you it was tough.

My brother helped her to be easy with them and both my daughters picked up the fun of bursting…so how about your experiences please come forward to share here…sunkan

Nice blog.We stayed in mumbai, and just oppostie our building was a building where South Indians stayed.They celebrate Diwali on Dhan Teras, that is 2 days before Diwali.

And they burst crackers earl;y morning 5 onwards, so at 7, me and brothers used to go there and pick up the unburnt crackers,as we were not well off then.And when Dad used to buy us a few Vedis, i think what we call " Lar ", the string of crackers, we used to seperate each, and burn with Aggarbattis, to make them last longer.

And i will write a blog on this too in a few days.So many memories come flooding.Now my daughters are not interested, bcs we have a dog and he is scared of the noise,so daughter says no crackers.

The only prank we played was celebrating Diwali South Indian style. We lived in North and north eastern India all my childhood ... So bursting crackers at 4 am or 5 am was the ultimate thrill . Of course we would choose the biggest fire-cracker... the 10,000 ladi. All our friends would be cursing us!!!! But then they would burst crackers all night till 2 am
My mom had the compulsion of bursting one lakshmi vedi the first thing in the morning... she just had to be the first.. So she would rush through the diwali morning rituals to burst it.. but afterwards she would not touch the fire-crackers.

when we were kids the fun was more but when we turn parents our children want to see only tv the latest programme and they dont even go out to meet friends, so what can be done i only think of those days of enjoyment the fight, the crying and manaoing the rustle of showing off our new clothes the fight for a silk pavadai or something equally colorful, nothing going to come back, my mom was a kitchen bird all the while she would say veedey koil and aduppe deivam, joint family all burden on her. thanku for joining me here..sunkan

Those are the days!
I totally agree with you with all the scenarios on the Deepavali day!
but i am a total disgrace in the field of vedis.
I was so afraid of that, i used to climb the stairs 1 or 2 up after lighting the 'vishnu chakram' and so with the 'busvaanam'. maybe 'saattai and kambi mathaappu' are my favourites
Now in US, we cannot do like that!
but we use the fire crackers we buy for the "Independence Day'. this is the only time they sell the fire crackers and the children enjoy doing that in the morning ( if there is a holiday) but only in the evenings mostly.

We cant afford much... Then going to temple and relatives house to play with cousins and sweets....hahahaha.. Thinking about it now feel like supidity... Those days it was fun...

Comes a period... When the Dewali comes, we used to get worries... For 7/8 years... we used to spend Deepavali day in the hospital... Once it was me, then my daddy / mom... Those days, we used to be scared, when deepavali comes... Then slowly things changed...

After marriage I cherished the ddepavali...That is the time, when we take dresses for all.. The whole family.. Dad/mom.. both pattis, sisters kids etc... That was fun...

Now, here in Muscat... Deepavali, is one more day...

Waiting for the grand Deepavali.....Next...

those days were not so high standard but the simple food and meeting people and relatives more of kudhukalam i must say, and so many arguments about who stole mine and then the food and sweets of various types, now no interest may be we are the sicker lot i must say, though yes this diwali i am going to make an effort to make it good because my chitra is going to leave soon and next time it may be as their nattupon and though yes she is my daughter i dont know what changes might come over..sk

When I was young I had a group of friends. Ofcourse, we used to get up early and there used to be a competition who got up early and who fired the first cracker. Afterwards, it used to be a show off of our new dress. I used to get my shirt stiched as per M.G.R style with very short and tight sleeve, T-shirt type and with some jari works around the neck. We then used to go to nearby water falls called 'Puloothu' in cycles and there we will burst bombs, eat all the sweets and mixtures and rest on the cool shades of grass. One of our friends had a transisitor radio and we were listening to Radio Ceylon for Tamil film songs. In the evening, we had to see a new realease picture at all costs and then only Diwali would be complete. I never celebrated Diwali like that afterwards.
