Default Old is Gold

If you are expecting me to list things in support of the saying 'Old is gold', I feel I am not competent to write and I leave it to Cheeniya sir to write in his own inimicable humourous style. What prompted me to write this post is the news I read here that a person in possession of a twnty hundred year old cents coin got millions of dollars in exchange. This brought to my memory two things, one what happened in our own house and the other a brilliant story by the famous Tamil writer Sujatha.

First, in our house just before the marriage of my eldest sister, my parents faced some financial problem. My grandmother (father's mother) had left behind a box full of assorted items and we started looking curiously as we had heard that she had the habit of collecting precious stones such as muthu, manickam, vaidurium, komethakam etc. To our delight we did find a small box of stones and my mother told after looking in them that only a particular blue stone can fetch some money. Anyway, we took the small box of stones to a jweller. He looked at the stones and kept aside the blue stone and two others. To our delight, he told that he can give sizable amount not for the blue stones but the other two. The money came handy in performing the marrige.

Sujatha's story goes like this. Srinivasan who works in Chennai gets a telegram that his aged grandfather living in Srirangam has passed away. When he reached the house and after the final rites, he goes through the belongings of his grandfather. There are lots of letters that his grandfather had written to people and some are there with the envelops also. He collects all and put them in the trash bin which is taken by the Municipal trash collector. After this he sees in the local newspaper an advertisement from the U.K postal authorities that a rare stamp with queen Victoria's photo published 60 years ago is needed by them and their record shows that there is only one stamp is there. They are offering million pounds for the stamp. Srinivasan then recollects seeing among the grandfather's letters, one he had received from the Buckingham palace as a reply to his letter and the envelop had that rare stamp. He runs behind the lorry collecting the rubbish only to find in the end that the rubbish have been thrown into the incinerator.

So, the lesson is 'Don't throw all old things, there may be Gold in them'.

Hi TDU,

I wish someone in my family left me some treasures. When my grandmother died, the letters she left behind were the ones she got from her brothers and sisters and they did not even have the stamp . Else I would also have been like that man running behind the garbage truck.

Dear Veda,

Yes. It is a nice story and actually it should be read in Sujatha's words. Of course it is difficult to keep all old things. My wife used to throw away saying 'why you are keeping all muck'. My policy is 'siru thurumbum pal kutha uthavum'.

TDU

Dear Nivedi.

It need not be necessarily the stamp in old letters. I am sure in your grandmother's letters she would have shared her experiences or given sound advice and that will stand in good stead for you in times of need.

TDU
