Nandu
The Cuisinart that I have grinds maavu for vadai excellent. It makes dough for atta , chapathi is excellent. All shredding etc.. verygood.
Really the best as far as I am concerned. i think there are the 6 cup, 12 cup models. The link Mangai gave should be good.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nandshyam for starting this thread ;; FP is on my mind also for past 2 weeks ...

Hello AC, Mangai, friends who have both FP and wet-grinder,

Can you use FP for grinding idli/dosa dough ?

Do you use the wet-grinder for atta kneading ?? Do you get same softness in the dough, as when you knead with FP ?

Presently I'm adjusting [read struggling ] with a Braun blender for dosa batter --- haven't tasted idli for past 9 months ...
Grinder is anyway a MUST BUY now ;; should I buy FP also now, just for atta kneading , 'cos anyway I don't think I'll be using it for mincing slicing /chopping etc.

Am totally now ...... suggestions please !!

Thanks.

Hi Grace,
If I were you I will buy a grinder .Food Processor is nice to have. But its not a must like wet grinder.Atleast in my house I grind batter for every 3 days.Even if FP is not there I can knead the dough using hand.I really don't think you can grind batter in FP. Thats my opinion.
Thanks
Mangai

Grace, I have an ultra grinder. Best for Idli-Dosa batter. I have preethi for vadais and other stuff.

If you wont be using FP for other than atta kneading, then I would suggest dont buy it. Buy the grinder, that has the option for atta kneading as well. That way most of your necessities will be covered - Idli-dosa, vadai, atta kneading.

I was/am contemplating about it too. Weighing my necessities, its will be a failure if I buy it now. After this christmas, new year's[planning to bake for few parties], I will probably put it to sleep in corner of some closet. Even if I use them it will be only for atta kneading, which I can do it with my grinder.

So think over it

Whew !! One big confusion is over for me now ...
Mangai & Nandshyam, thanks guys ; I've decided now to go for wet grinder only . I thought I can use FP for idli/dosa also, that's why was unable to decide . FP is tempting , but not a sensible purchase considering my usage for it will be limited ...

ladies, for helping me decide.

Hi

I use Ultra for grinding idli/Dosa batters and for shredding coconut with the shredder attachment.

I have a phillips food processor bought for S$150 5 years ago.
I use it for
1.atta kneading,
2. chopping big/small onions -weekly
4. gratting carrots
5. grating cabbage
6. mincing chillies
7. slicing chillies/big onions- weekly
8. Slicing kovakkai
9. the juicer-for orange juices.
10. dry grind attachment for all the dry powders.
11. the mixer for blending.

I have Preethi for chutneys, etc.

Each appliance is used in its own way. But I feel that cleaning the FP is the worst part bonk.

Vijee,

So you have both Preethi and Food Processor ;
I had totally decided on Ultra & Preethi for my kitchen needs.
But now after reading your post , have one huge question ; does your FP do whatever Preethi can do ??
Chutneys can be ground in FP too , right ??
Do you use your Preethi for something exclusively which can't be done in the food processor ??

Hope I'm not bothering with so many questions ...

I have been using Cuisinart DLC-10S Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor for a few years now. Use it to shred vegetables (carrots, cabbage, cucumber etc), slicing for salads, chopping spinach and other greens. Also at times I make chapathi dough in this one if I happen to have guests. Its been handy always. I bought it from linens n things for $75 almost 4 years back. Here's a link to amazon.com Amazon.com: Cuisinart DLC-10S Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor: Home & Garden

Hi all,

I am glad that we have this thread - I too am thinking about buying another FP for a while now (after reading some of the yummy recipes out here) - I have an Ultra wet grinder that I use to make idli/dosa batter. I also have an oster blender. My FP is a Cuisinart Mini Food Processor - looks like this:
Amazon.com: Cuisinart DLC-2ABC Mini Prep Plus, Brushed Chrome: Kitchen & Dining

So far, I use it to grate carrots/cabbage - I also use it to shred coconut for sundals since I buy whole coconut.

The one I have has only one blade. Do your FPs have different kind of blades?
