    Hai Raji,
did you say for 1 month old niece? The baby will be very small and I don't feel it would be comfortable for the baby to wear pavadai now itself.
If you meant a one year old niece, then there is a very comfortable design for toddlers.
You need to stitch a small upper without sleeves and attach the pavadai it it. This way, the child will feel comfortable and also the paavadai will not come off. I am attaching a pattern for your reference. Do let me know if you need anyhelp.
One metre of cloth will be enough for the pavadai. For the top, you may need 1/2 mt. white cotton cloth.
Measure the height of the baby from shoulder to its waist and also around. Take 2 inches more on the sides for seam allowance and 1 inch in the height for stitching.
Measure the height of the pavadai, from the waist to the feet level. With 1 mt cloth as width, make tiny or broad gatherings on the top side to waist measurement. Then join the ends to make it round.
Now cut the top slip and attach the shoulders, stitich the neck, armhole etc. with bias binding. Then make an opening at the back. Stitich the pattis for attaching hook or buttons. Then, join slightly at the waist side to make it also round like the pavadai.
Atttach both portions, the edge of the slip with the pleasted portion of the pavadai. Now stitch the hem and the pavadai is ready.

re: Sewing / Tailoring / Stitching : Pavadai or Pavada or Langa patterns

    Hi Riji,

Two small additions to Varloo’s mail.
Instead of white cloth for the body portion or top portion, use the same colour cloth like pavadai. . This will give a good look, when you put a transparent blouse for her. ( If the Inner cloth is white, it wont look nice).
Another one is, use Velcro pieces instead of hooks and buttons. :goodidea: Hooks and buttons may give pain when she lays down
