Hi all,
We live at Istanbul, Turkey and I am facing the same problem with my 7 yr old daughter who is presently doing her grade 2 in an international school here. I have brought back with me all the relevant books for std 2 from India as the international standards are very low and and at the elementary level when compared to our indian syllabus. As such we are coaching her at home on all possible subjects, and she also takes spanish at School here. But she does not know hindi nor tamil ( to read and write), and i dont know how we will manage once we move back. Any suggestions on the second languages offered at chennai schools would be very much appreciated and also i would like to know whether many schools offer foreign languages as second language especially spanish. i am confused as to whether to start coaching an indian language here, as already i feel the child is burdened with many subjects and its many variations.
Looking forward to your replies.
thanx in advance.

hi jay,
I too faced the same problems. Right now, I'm in US and I'm planning to return to india in May. I'm returning for the same reason, as the education level and culture are very poor here. We are from Chennai, and my son does'nt know to speak or write tamil. We speak telegu at home, and its even more confusing for him. I underwent tremendous pressure seeking for admission in Chennai schools, that too, sitting from here. Later, my parents helped me by finding out a school in Chetpet (MCC) which offered French as 2nd lang from 6th grade. What a relief for me..yet, I need to seek admission for my daughter in 1st grade. We are trying to get some recommendation to put her in a good school. So, this is how my story goes.....
yes..it will be very difficult for NRI kids to get well trained in 2nd lang, especially when we compare the syallabus, it seems even impossible.. I got 5th grade tamil book, and it was so tough even for me, then imagine how it will be for a NRI kid. All is possible, only if the kid is really interested in spending some time learning it.
thats it from me..
bye

Hi NRI parents
I live in Melbourne and planning to r2i by next year. My son is 5 years old and has started PREP here. We are also thinking as to how he will cope, as we are not very sure about the curriculum. Can some one let me know what would the general syllabus be for 2nd std Tamil.
However, this is what I have been doing for my son, to familiarize with Tamil. Any further suggestions are also welcome. Even though he doesnt know to write, I have taught him the alphabet sounds, numbers, names of common things and animals.
Cheers

... you will get to have a look of the tamil syllabbus and also have an idea to teach him.since he is still young, he will definitely catch fast.only thing as a parent we should give the child some adjusting time..and not force them about the performance as long as they give their best shot.

Hello Geeta
I do agree with you 2nd language is a problem in India. Being a NRI for the last 9 yrs My son has not studied continuously for more then 2 an 1/2 yr in any of the school. Even when I was in India. From the very beginning. From jr kg till 3rd he did his 2nd language in hindi and after that we left India. later he took french but since we did not get good education in fiji for 5th I had to keep him in India for 2 yrs but always carried some hindi story books or essay books and made him read those books so that he will not forget the language so that was very helpful for me when I had to keep him in India for 5th and 6th class later when got transfered to malaysia got him back with us since then and continued with french till 8th and then we went to Australia and he continued with the same and now we are here and he is doing his 12th class but this year he has taken Spanish.
But now a days in all the good schools we do have additional english or some foreign language which we can choose. Or can try for an international schools where you will not face this problem.
But it is always helpful to carry the 2nd language books with us and teach them little bit, so that we will not face any problems when we go back to India.
