Default Elementary school admission

Hi,

Few months back myself and my kid moved into the US joining my husband who works in a H1B visa.

My kid is 5 yrs old. He has completed K.G classes in India.
Can I get him into 1st grade in Elelmentary schools here?

Default 5yrs will be admitted only into KG classes

Sheeba,
The school system works slightly different here in the US.
Kids start their KG classes here only at 5, unlike in India where they start at 3. Here 3-4 yrs old go to montessori schools (more like pre-kg).

I doubt whether your kid can get into 1st grade at 5yrs. May be it's worth to put him KG classes again in some public school here, so that he will get used to the accent.

Hope this info helps!

Default Assesment test for 1st grade admission

Hi Sheeba,

Rathi is right...the kids will be admitted in KG on completion of 5yrs.
After a year in KG, the schools in the US expect the kids to go through an assessment test for 1st grade admission.

Rathi & Roshni,

Thanks for your message.

I also came to know from few people in my neighbourhood that public schools take admissions starting from 5yrs kids and they are completely free. Parents need to take care of only expenses like buying books, art and paperwork items, dress and their food.

Otherwise, the school does not take any education fees. Is that true with all public schools? Will the standard of teaching be good?

Sheeba,

Yes, the public schools are absolutely free. Teaching standard is pretty good.
While there are few public schools asking for admission donation/fund, most of them are free.

You just need to take care of your kids dress, books and other study material they would ask to buy now and then. If you are going to ask your kid to take food provided at school, you need to pay for it. Otherwise, he can take food from home.
