Default Returning to India and live all by myself

Hi Ladies,

I live in Scotland for nearly 10 years. My boys are 11 and 9. I am planning to move to India preferably Chennai or Madurai in the next academic year. Found this link accidently and very very helpful and I am gaining more confident in moving as well, as I read the threads. Well done Ladies. Let me tell you my problem. I have no parents or in-law committment to come to India, I come purely for Indian exposure. Recently my husband is registered for his higher studies and will be committed to live in UK for next 3 years. So, I have to move to India and live with children all by myself. I am very scared for not knowing the unknowns. Is there any safe areas to live in chennai?. Again I have to look at the schools in that chosen safe area(if any exist). Is it manageable to both work(part time) and taking care of children.

Is there any NRI living alone with children with same experience.

many thanks
Malathy

You are welcome!
The life style depends on your expenditures. If you spend more you can live in Palace. If you wish to save select a moderate place. Part time jobs may be available for ladies. But most ladies prefer to take classes.

Malathy hearty welcome to this forum...

Just went through your query...

Stay cool..Life is cool in South..No worries..As how in western countries you all manage things on your own..here too ladies and gents manage..

Chennai and Madurai are incomparable..

Both have different lifestyles..Cost of living,Environment,neighborhood.....

Decide and tell us...We are here to help you..

Thanks so much for the replies. I try to stay positive, but the moment I start thinking about Schooling how they are going to cope up with environment , the system, friends, examinations (both of my children don't speak tamil, but can understand) many many things. The more I make them aware of Indian school they get scared and don't want to go.
For this reason my husband prefers to put them in a boarding school in any hill station which will take away the factors like heat, extra activities etc. But I don't know how far that is good.

I am looking for places to live in Chennai. Not a palace. since I have to live alone, I require some secure area.

Both of them are UK citizen and so am I. So, I need to start everything from scratch, like ration card(if needed) etc.

Any input would be highly appreciated.

once again thanks
Malathy

Now-a-days there are many international schools in Chennai...Come and experience the wonders...

I am not exaggerating anything..Jut telling you the fact..

As the manufacturing companies and IT companies are developing..naturally people from various countries such as Korea,China,Japan,US and UK are residing here in N-number...Ouirts are developing like anything...All their kids and family are comfortably settled here..Most of the schools have full Air conditioned facility too..Education wise i have nothing to say..Hope you know the standards of our place..Just Great....

Many township kind of projects are blooming in Chennai..Where you have everything in one compound such as "Residential area,Shopping place,Recreation Facility,Education system and so on"..

Google the word "Estancia" or "Estancia, Chennai"..You can get an idea..Like this there are many options..

Check them peacefully

Malathy - just wanted to say that non-citizens of India cannot acquire ration cards at all. Based on my aunt's experience (she is an American citizen who spends a significant part of the year in Chennai) you cannot open regular accounts in most banks (some banks offer NRI services and accounts which you can use - eg Citibank) nor get a ration card nor apply for a govt-subsidized gas connection (cooking gas; you can buy from private dealers however at a significantly higher cost). Renting should not be a problem - a gated community might be more secure but will definitely be more expensive. As for schools it might be ebst to look for schools offering the Cambridge exam (IGCSE) Edexcel in the Indian subcontinent | Edexcel or the IB - the IGCSE schools offer O and A levels just like the UK and your kids might feel more at home. But if its India exposure you are seeking then an International school and agated community kind of defeats your purpose Jobs - what is your area? Maybe someone could help you there if we knew what you were looking for.

Vanathi.

Malathy/Vanathi - I have a ration card(I am a US citizen). I think anybody residing in India can apply and get one. I also have regular bank accounts(again once you are a resident you can't maintain NRI accounts). All my NRI bank a/cs had to be closed and resident ones opened and funds transfered. For both these, I just showed my address proof(apt registration docs) and OCI card(PIO will suffice as well). I also got a regular HP gas connection(ration card/DL as address proof).

*Added - Vanathi, in your Aunt's case, she may be maintaining NRI status by moving back and forth between the two countries. I've ensured that both in the US and in India my primary country of residence is maintained as India. Same with my DH(he travels back and forth quite often on business trips though).

HTH,
Laks

good for you that your boys are in a age, where they can easily adapt even if they do have problems initially.

what do you mean by Indian exposure. do you mean academics, cultural or the indian environment. cultural, there is definitely a big gap between what nri's think india is and what india is.

I assume you want to stay in india for the next 3 years, so that your DH can pursue his studies.

Define unknowns. nothing remains unknown for long dear. necessity makes you go ahead. safe is a subjective term.

Personally would suggest chose the school and then look for the safe area.

I would say, take some time off, concentrate on helping and smoothing your kids transition and then look out.

Is there any NRI living alone with children with same experience.

I am one if i can say so. but i had a set up in chennai. i returned from the gulf because of a commitment .I have a 14 year old daughter who studies in 9th and a 11+ son who is in 6th.

two different choices. let us look at it practically, chennai is hot, hotter and hottest (though it is raining because of a depression as i type this.) but once your kids get acclimatised they are going to be fine. it is only us the elders who have mental blocks (I suppose, i maybe wrong too.)

if you are planning to return back to scotland, then i don't think you need a ration card. but if you are going to establish indian residentship as laks09 says you can definitely apply for one.
If you are thinking of ration card for address proof, the indian government has come out with better ideas. you can get a address proof from your local post office, after establishing your self in a area and going and applying and paying the fees.

WEll apart from these, I would say go through a few discussions, like this and this and another.
analyse your preferences, available options, pros and cons and then talk to your kids .

Do come back with your questions and thought process.

HTH,

I guess you are right because this info is what I heard from my aunt and apparently she was told by some Govt official that she cannot get a ration card (and without that you cannot have a gas connection etc.). But you are absolutely right in that she doesnt live permanently in India and so the rules are probably different for her.

Malathy - my apologies for misleading you in any way.

Dear Ladies,

Thanks so much for all the replies. I feel really really confident now. No. If I move to India it is going to be a permanent one. So, no mistakes made there.

Indian exposure I mean here is the celebrations, festivals, survival of the fittest, to see how privileged my children are in life(pl. don't mistake me) and of course friends and relatives.

Since I don't have any solid binding reason(above ones are hopes I think) to go back to India, I think I am making such a big fuss and picking minute things or being such a coward. Having known the fact that it is going to be challenging I have to make up my mind.

once again, thanks very much .

Malathy
