Terra Nova Test / State Evaluation Exams ...Need Help

Hi !

My DS was studying in a private school till kindergarten and for first grade we moved him to a charter school(it's like a public school) .He's doing pretty well and the teacher always gives excellent reviews for both his academic and social skills.She told in last one-on-one meetings that he's way ahead in his class and is capable of being in 3rd grade now.I am not very familiar with the exams that are conducted by state to evaluate kids.

In his previous school, they used to sent report cards , but never used to announce any exams beforehand - they were usually conducted by class teacher itself .

Can you shed some light on the tests/exams like Terra Nova and the like that's conducted for elementary school kids? Do they conduct these exams at school ?Also, can you please suggest books that would help to prepare for these tests?
