Default 9year old /10 year old kids /girls

Hi Ladies:

I am mother of a 9year old girl. 9 and 10 year old kids are neither in their teens nor they are considered as small children. Lets talk about thier behaviour, attitudes and mischief. What about moms of such girls?Have you all started talking to your girls about puberty? My daughter will turn 10 in couple of months and I havent yet talked to her about it.
Please share your thoughts here.

Adara

Dear Adara
I think its right time to explain abt puberty to yr daughter. So that she wont get panicked when it happens to her. otherwise these girls will develop their own story and unwanted problems.

Thanks umasridharan for your response to my thread. Yes, I thought so. I might talk to her very soon. I really dont like her getting caught with puberty with false info. She has not yet turned 10, I still have a couple of months to get myself prepared first before I actually talk.

Hi Adara,
i have a 10 yr old daughter and a 8 yr old son.It is very difficult to discuss these issues with them...but luckily here in Sinfapore...they do this topic as a science lesson and also i spoke to my DD and explained a few things...not too much in detail.i told her to come to me for anything and am there to help her in all these matters.
Do not wait for her to mature and explain as they will be lost.explain in a scientific way and say that it is something very natural and nothing to be scared about. tell her about the advertisements that come on tv and explain what they are talking about...
but do all these things when u start observing bodyily changes in her ...otherwise it is too early.
cheers,
Uma

I am yet to reach there.... My daughter is only 4 & 4 months, but I'm already get all about how she'll be... because before I know it, she'll be there.

I wanted to share this link with you. While going thru' it, I realized that it was a good way of letting our children know about periods. If they have any questions, they can ask.

Take care.

Hi,
First a big thanks to JustAni. Thankyou very much for the link. I watched it .
Thanks Adara for starting this thread. Actually I logged in to see if there is a thread on this topic. One of my friends daughter who is only 9yrs and 3 months old got her period yesterday. She wasn't ready and was pretty scared. I just sent the link to my friend.

My daughter is going to be 9yrs old in a month. I really don't know if I have to let her watch this. Is it too early for a 9yr old ?. Please Suggest.

Shobi.

hi shobi,

I have seen a friend's daughter who had her periods at the age of 8. so the average according to my gynaec today for india is 10, and for us/uk is 8-9.

This is what my gynaec suggested, check if they have hair growth on the underarm, and private parts, and breast development, if so then it is better to keep them aware of these things..

So as a mother, we do get tensed, but it is better to take a decision based on family hereditary, and your child's growth.

Hello Shanvy,

Am quite concerned now, reading your post ; 8-9 years is toooooooooo early for puberty !! My daughter just turned 7 last month, and I'm really anxious now ...
While I was growing up, 12 or 13 yrs. was the norm. for attaining maturity . But the given age now seems so paavam .. they are just little kids still .
Any idea why this disparity among countries ? Does the food intake play any role in the way body develops ?

Grace,

It was not to scare anybody. I was also in the same boat when i saw my friends daughter suffering at 8.3months, though indian, a gulf resident.
gynaec says the food habits determine, along with the family heriditary also..

yes, the food intake, plays a major role. i am not the right person to explain about it.

i have heard of girls attaining puberty at 17,then 15, later 13/12, now 10...

My daughter is 13 and i am keeping my fingers crossed. but I had to explain to her when she was 10 after taking the opinion from my gynaec.

Don't panic. you are the better judge.
