Is there some kind of standardized test to asses the child's skills levels?.. Has anyone heard about it?..

Hi Shilpa,

There are different types of Standardized tests here in US, right from elementary schools to high schools.

Some Standardized tests are given for children to asses their overall ability in all subjects, some are given to judge the Academic Performance of the schools. These tests are given in elementary, middle and high schools.

Also these standardized tests and testing times(meaning fall/early or late spring) differ in each state in US..and have a different name too.

But SAT's (scholastic Aptitude test and Scholastic Assessment tests) are given for College admissions here in USA.

Could you please be more specific for which age group you want the information for?

As for entrance tests to the schools here...as far as I know, there are none in public schools. But tests & quizzes are given periodically.

Hope this information is what you are looking for.

Cheers
Krithika

Thanks Krithika,

I'm looking for standardized tests for a 5 year old stepping into elementary, not sure it is too early to do that...but just want to get some knowledge about these kind of tests..

Could you provide little more details as to who one can get the information about eligibilty & how and where these tests are conducted?..

Will it be too early for a kindergartner??
any websites perhaps!

Very valuble information from you...thanks again..

Hi Shilpa,

Happened to see this post only today after a long time !! Sorry for the delay !

There is no entrance tests for Kindergarten here.

As for the tests that I mentioned above, these are conducted in the respective schools and there is no eligibilty/criteria for this. Infact, some parents even waive out their kids from appearing for these standardized tests (in cases where this option is given)

The type/pattern of the tests varies in different states. For eg, in California, these are given in early Spring, but here in Virginia, they are tested late spring (just before the school closes for Summer break)

Will soon get back to you abt the name of websites (have saved quite a few)

Cheers
Krithika

2003 - 2007 CST Released Test Questions - Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) (CA Dept of Education)

Parent Guide: California's Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR)

Hey Shilpa,

In Ohio, there are tests for children from Kindergarten for gifted child program. So first check with your school district - the website should give you most of the information. If you think that your child might be advanced and you are thinking of getting him tested, best bet would be to do a google search in your area for schools for gifted children. If you contact any of them, they will be able to provide you resources of centers where they test kids of any age for giftedness.

Hope this helps
