Episode 11

For an ordinary member of WomenWorldwide.com those two months remained fairly eventless. But so many things happened in the lives of the people connected to the website.

Excellence had now become a way of life with almost all the forums, so much so that a great thread appearing in the Finance Forum or Interior Decoration Forum was considered a routine feature.

Kripa and Janaki constituted themselves into a committee called the FPC (Finest Post Committee) which was entrusted with the task of showcasing the finest post in every forum.

Mathangi who was in charge of Interior Decoration was now handling a lot of queries from members. Women who were in the process of building houses had now become tough negotiators with their architects and interior decorators.

Every thread of Mathangi was rich with lots of information. But the one which the FPC chose to showcase was quite unique.

A fifty two year old house wife had raised a query. Her only daughter and her husband, both working as software engineers in the US were visiting for two weeks. The lady and her retired husband were living in a two-bed room flat in Mandaiveli.

The flat had gone pretty old. They had approached their neighbour who was a small time architect for some kind of a ‘make-up’ for the flat. But the cost he had quoted was quite high and they had to drop the idea with a heavy heart.

With their daughter’s visit barely a month away could something be done to improve the aesthetics of the flat at an affordable cost?

The lady had also posted pictures of their drawing room, the master bedroom (the one they had planned to give to their daughter and her husband) and the kitchen.

Mathangi suggested a simple colouring scheme using some inexpensive distemper. She had suggested some good wall-posters for the bedroom and an extensive wall-papering scheme for the kitchen and drawing room.

A large mirror mounted on the wall on one side of the bed room made it look larger. Some artistic objects like terra -cota statues were thrown in for good measure to give a pleasing look.

Mathangi used Photoshop software to make the suggested changes in the picture posted by the lady. There were elaborate to-do instructions and even a bill of materials.

FPC just showcased the two pictures side by side – the original picture before decoration and the picture edited by Mathangi to simulate the decorating effects. The pictures were worth much more than the proverbial thousand words.

Shobana now had a great fan following in her Finance and Accounts Forum. Her primer on Accounting Scams tracing the phenomenon from the good old Enron days to the latest, the Satyam Scam, became an instant hit.

But FPC chose to showcase her lesson on a very interesting concept related to her field – the science of probability.

“The lesson is fairly simple and yet very useful not just for Finance but for life as well.

Let’s say I am tossing a coin. What is the chance I will get heads? It is one by two, or half or 50%, right? How do we arrive at this figure? We have a simple formula – the chance or probability is equal to the number of favourable events divided by the number of all possible events.

Here the possible events are two – one, getting Heads and two, getting tails. And favourable event is one – getting Heads. So the probability of getting heads is one divided by two that is fifty percent.

Sounds elementary, right? Yes. Too simplistic, right? Not at all.

Let me extend the analogy. Let’s think of a lottery scheme. And they sell, let’s say, ten thousand tickets, at a cost of Rs. 10 per ticket.

Let’s assume that there is only one prize and that is a cash award of Rs.5, 000. Suppose you have bought one ticket at a cost of Rs. 10/- What is the probability that you will win the prize?

The same old formula – number of favourable events by number of all possible events. Here the number of favourable events is 1. And the number of all possible events is 10000, because any one of the ten thousand tickets sold (including the one you have bought) might win the prize.

So the probability is 1/10000 or 0.0001. In other words you have just one in a ten thousand chance of winning Rs. 5000/-. What is the real value of the ticket?

Again simple arithmetic. 5000 multiplied by 1/10000 or fifty paise. But you have paid 10 Rs for the ticket; do you still consider yourself wise?

The lottery agency has sold you a chance which worth fifty paise for Rs. 10/-. And they have made a profit of Rs.9.50 in every ticket, a whopping 1900% profit. If there are no printing costs or other overheads or advertisement, then their total profit will be R.9.50 multiplied by the number of tickets sold, that is Rs. 95000.

This is a simple lottery scheme. The real-world lottery schemes are far worse. They always advertise the size of the prize in bold letters. Win Rs. 10 crores, says the ad.

It does not even say in fine print about the number of tickets the agency actually printed and the real value of your chance of winning.
Mathematicians have estimated the probability of your winning the first prize in a typical lottery scheme.

Let’s assume a monkey from the forest invades your office. It jumps on the key-board of your computer and then randomly presses the keys with its hands, legs and other body parts.

What’s the probability that the monkey would turn out a beautiful piece of poetry? Well your chance of winning in a typical lottery scheme is just about the same.

I am not saying whether buying raffle tickets is morally good or bad. It’s sheer stupidity.

What has got lottery to do with finance and business, I can hear you ask. But probability is all about risk. And so is your business, finance and even your life.

I will tell you an instance where you sell probability. What is the chance that your house will be burnt down by fire? Probably one in a million. If your house is burnt the cost of rebuilding it might come to, let’s say, a million dollars.

As it is likely to happen only once in a million times, the risk, or the value of the probability of loss is only one dollar. If an insurance company could insure your one million dollar house for one dollar, there is no loss no gain for you or for your insurance company. But what is the insurance premium you normally pay? And now do you understand how insurance companies make their millions?

But that does not mean that you should not insure your house. That also does not mean that insurance companies will make that kind of profits all the time. Now let’s dirty our hands with the bolts and nuts of probability theory and risk analysis.. .. ..

Part 3!

Janaki and Bala were deep into religious forum. KG’s stories and his teachings approached religion at a different level. Of course everybody loved it and some went crazy over it.

But many people still needed the support of an organised, ceremonial and ritualistic religion. For example a lady from Gujarat settled in Texas wanted some details about Karva Chauth.

Karva Chauth was a fast observed mostly by North Indian women in September/October every year praying God to bless their husbands with long lives. In a typical Karva Chauth observance the lady gets up early in the morning and starts beautifying herself with henna, flowers and jewels. She does not even take a morsel of food till it is time for the moon to rise. Then the lady worships the moon, sees her husband through the pores of a sieve and then only she takes her first food for the day.

Bala answered all the questions posed by the lady living in Texas and even went on to add that the festival had its roots in the Great Epic Mahabharata and that Goddess Parvathi was the first to observe the tradition.

Janaki was virtually an authority on all the South Indian festivals. Whether it was recipe for a medicinal item traditionally consumed on the Diwali day, or the rules and regulations for Varalakshmi Nonbu, Janaki was in her element and gave exact details to the women all over the world.

That part of the Religion Forum became very popular.

The going was so good in all the forums that Destiny thought it was time to smile at the community. At first its smile was so little that it was barely visible. Even that had its effect.

Bala and I have decided not to write any more in the Religion Forum. We will just stick to our original brief. You know, Yamini, after all we are just cooks. - Janaki

Yamini was upset by the curt email from Janaki. As a post script she had given link to a post in the Religion Forum. Yamini immediately clicked the link.

Dear Moderators,

What’s happening here? The Religion Forum is a sacred place where we discuss Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Bible and other important religious concepts. Now I see it has been hijacked by a pair of cooks, or should I say crooks?

And the irony is that one of them is a specialist in non-vegetarian items. She writes elaborately about how to cook meat in one thread and even before the ink goes dry, she comes here to write about some North Indian fasting festival. The vegetarian lady thinks that she is the Gitacharyan herself and is making childish attempts to explain the intricate meanings contained in Gita slokas

I do not know about others. As for me I will never degrade myself to the level of listening about our country’s festivals or religious observances from a cook, and particularly one who cooks meat and beef.

Revathi

Yamini was shocked. What rudeness! What discourtesy! Height of incivility! No wonder Janaki and Bala were offended. But to let them withdraw now will be giving way to impertinence. It will be letting a mean-minded crook have her way in the Site Administration. That was the last thing Yamini wanted.

She saw the time. It was seven thirty in the evening. She moved over to the Central Forums page and found all the moderators except Shobana were on line.

She convened a meeting of all the moderators at 7 45 to deal with a class one emergency.

She had also sent the links of the problem-post to all of them.

The Moderators were unanimous in condemning Revathi. They spent the first fifteen minutes to shower abuses on her.

“I will issue an ultimatum to Revathi asking her to apologize to you both in the Open Forum within 48 hours. She is not likely to do that and we will use that as an excuse to kick her out.”

When Yamini pronounced her judgment everyone except the affected parties welcomed it.

Bala now spoke for both of them.

“Janaki and I thank you all for the proposed action. KG is the forum leader for the Religion Forum. So let’s wait to see his reaction. If he keeps mum it means only one thing. He does not want us participating in the religious discussions. If that’s the case we will silently walk out. The last thing we would like to do is to hurt a loving soul like KG

The Moderators did not know what to say.

After five minutes of silence Prathi posted a jumping smiley.

“Hi guys. Let’s take a ten-minute break and meet at the same place. I see some new post in that forum.”

Within a few seconds all the Moderators were in the Religion forum. KG had responded to Revathi’s post.

Dear Revathi,
Your post has hurt me the most. I am as much surprised by your ignorance as I am appalled by your rudeness.

From the user ID you have chosen for yourself I presume that you are an Indian. And from your question I presume that you were not brought up in this country. For if you had grown up here in good family circumstances you would have realized that in India, unlike the West, religion and philosophy are not mere views of life but ways of actual living. Religion is not one compartment in life for us. It permeates all our activities from eating, sleeping, working, marriage and child-rearing. And the maximum impact of religion is in the area of eating.

Last week Janaki had explained the meaning of the three qualities or Gunas as narrated in Bhagavad Gita. Satwa, Rajas and Tamas.. Purity, rashness and dullness. White, red and black. And do you know Revathi there are three types of food as well – Saatvic, Raajasic and Tamasic? If your food has lot of peppers and chillies and high fat content as well, it will make you restless unless you indulge in some kind of extreme action – like a fight, or a heavy exercise or a sports activity that demand lot of power.

In the Taitriya Upanishad the Rishi advises the seeker to first meditate on food. The Upanishad roars, “Annam brahma” “Food is God.”

The great saint Ramanujacharya was once dictating commentaries on some religious text to his disciple Koorathazhwan.

At one point the disciple refused to write down the words of his preceptor.

‘Hi idiot, why are you not writing?” shouted the Acharya.

“Because Gurudeva, what you said was not right.”

“Have you become wiser than me?”

“Not at all, Acharya. I don’t want your name be spoilt by this mistake.”

Ramanuja was red hot with anger and walked out of the scene. The writing work was stopped.

The disciple was sitting in the same place till evening when the Acharya returned.

“Do you remember what did I say last?”

The disciple repeated his teacher’s words which he had earlier refused to write.

The greatest of saints, the holiest of Acharyas patted his disciple on his back and told him softly,

“I was wrong, Koorathalzhwan. You are right. Please forgive me for what I have done to you.”

The disciple fell at his Gurudeva’s feet.

“Please don’t say one word more and make me an irredeemable sinner. After all I used only your teaching to counter you. “

The Acharya was now surprised about his hasty reaction in the morning.

“Boy, the mistake should be in the food I ate today.”

The teacher and disciple thereafter thoroughly investigated every item that was eaten by the Acharya since morning and found out one item of impurity which had spurred such an adamancy in the otherwise loving Gurudeva.

Have you ever noticed that religion and food are intertwined? So much so that there are days of fasting and days of feasting in any religion worth its name in the world.

Revathi, you have hurt the two Annapooranis of our site by your not so civil post.

I do not know whether our site’s Moderators will forgive you or not. But I am sure that the Great Annapooraneswari sitting above will not forgive you as you have hurt people dear to Her heart.

In fine I now declare for everyone to know that Janaki and Bala are ten times more qualified than me to write in this Forum.

I don’t blame you Revathi. I only blame your parents for the bad upbringing. God bless you, my child.

You are right, KG. We are blessed. Otherwise we will not be living in the same time as you are and writing in the Forum of which you are the leader.

Next time when you pray please tell your Lord to give us a fraction of that divine love that resides in your heart for ever.

The moderators reassembled in their exclusive chat room. With KG’s response and Janaki’s reply thereto the stir created by Revathi had come to an unceremonious end. At least they thought so.

Prathi screamed in large size capital letters.

“YAMINI, THIS REVATHI IS NONE OTHER THAN SRIRAM WHO RESIGNED FROM THE SITE A FEW MONTHS AGO. AFTER WINNING THE FIRST PRIZE IN THE FICTION CONTEST.”

Kripa endorsed that finding.

“That idiot used the words cooks and crooks side by side. Prathi found that out. Then we checked the IP addresses in all the posts made by Revathi. I guess as Sriram he accessed our site from home.

“And as Revathi he did it from his office. We made a random check of the IP addresses attached to Sriram’s posts. There are two or three posts where Sriram and Revathi share the same IP address. So it’s the same person.”

“What do we do now?”

Bala answered Yamini’s question.

“This person looks pretty dangerous to me. Let’s revert to the earlier decision – issue an ultimatum asking him to seek an apology. And if he does not comply expel him. I simply dread at having such imposters in our midst.”

They all agreed. The smile on Destiny’s file was only mischievous now.

‘Poor ladies, they think that this is dangerous! If they only knew what is going to happen next, well, this Sriram/Revathi will look like a saint to them.’

Janaki now felt relaxed that the problem had gone away and by way of thanking the Holy Mother muttered her usual prayer in a loud voice.

“<st1lace w:st="on">Om</st1lace>, Hiranya varnam harinim Suvarna rajatasrajam
Chandraam hiranmayim Lakshmim jatavedo ma avaha.

Destiny shivered in fear. It looked up above, placed its hand on its narrow chest and told the Goddess.

‘Mother, I am just a spectator to your love. Even then it moves me. You are so kind to your children that you send medicines to them even before they are afflicted with the disease. Please do not mistake me, Mother. I too have a duty to do. Please let me do it.’

The Mother’s smile was benign.

Prathi and Kripa had found out something about Vindhan, the Fiction Forum Moderator, as well.

But decided that it was too early to broach that subject. Unknown to anybody the two computer geeks put Vindhan on a tight surveillance.

As this was happening a thirty five year old housewife from T.Nagar wrote a post in the community chit chat forum singing praises of a particular Builder by name KNR Properties.

She was saying in effect that she got an excellent flat in a prime area virtually for a song. The quality of construction was excellent and the delivery extremely prompt.

Destiny’s mischievous grin became wider. It mused

‘I have been waiting for some piece of action for a long time. And now it is starting to happen.’

Part 9!

Dr.Gayathri and her son Ravi were quite involved with the Counselling Forum. Ravi now got up earlier than usual, and sorted all the queries posted the previous day, took a print out and placed them on his mother’s table.

In the evening after office hours Gayathri would call her son and dictate her answers. Ravi would take them down on his laptop, edit them and post them along with the questions in the night.

At times Dr.Gayathri would not wait for Ravi. She will type the answers herself and send it as a mail to Ravi with the serial number of the question which Ravi had assigned earlier.

Ravi was now reading one such answer. The question was on a hackneyed subject. The role of money in our lives.

I play computer games when I need to relax on a typically stressful day. Any computer game involves some kind of scoring, collecting points, jewels or crowns, whatever may be the terminology used.

By playing a game called Bejeweled repeatedly I have become an expert in it. I have so far gathered more than 140000 jewels. In every game I win more than 30,000 points.

What do I do with those jewels? Can I wear them? No. Can I pledge them or sell them? Not at all. They are just virtual jewels which have a limited usage.

In that gaming community I am considered a very rich person. Junior players who have as little as 200 jewels in their account look upon me as a millionaire. For them I am Bill Gates and Warren Buffet rolled into one. But does it make any difference in my real life?

Money is exactly like the jewels collected by me in that game. It does have its role in our lives. We need it, no doubt. But to think that we can have happiness and fulfillment in our lives with money is at least as foolish as my attempting to wear the ‘jewels’ I have won in that game.

Believe me I am very happy and thrilled with the jewels I have won in that game. I won’t want to lose it for anything in the world. At the same time I am not naive enough to think that those jewels are real wealth.

And I request you too not to be naïve enough to consider your money as your real wealth. Your real wealth is happiness in life, healthy relationships and a job you love to do.

Dr.Gayathri had not given a sermon. She had not preached. And yet by her crisp words she had delivered a message which a modern mind could easily understand and appreciate.

What religious teachers had failed to do by their stereotyped condemnation of money, Gayathri had accomplished by her ingenious metaphor. Ravi took a print-out of the answer and placed it in his pocket.

He saw the time. 7: 55 PM. He put his laptop in hibernation mode and almost ran out of the house. He came back around 9 PM.
