    Annapurani - Legend.

Annapurani (Mother of plenty with food to offer) is the Hindu goddess of food. Annam meaning food, she is the goddess of food.

Once, Lord Shiva the lord of the world was angry with Lord Bramha. So he cut off one Brahma's five heads, sparing him only four. Since he cut the head of the creator, the great god himself felt hungry. To quell the hunger, Shiva asked his wife, goddess Parvathi to take the form of Annapurani. She did as she was told, and took form as Annapurani in the holy city of Varanasi. Lord Shiva begged for food from her there and ate the food given by her. His hunger was quelled. She built a temple for herself in Varanasi itself, just beside the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. In that temple is a 2 meter tall golden idol of Annapurani.

    Hi,

I am a firm believer of our Hindu culture, shivite or vaishnavite, I go to all the temples and enjoy. aarthi is performed in most of the vaishnavite temples where I go. some temples only do not do?

the questin about vaishnavism is huge.

Vaishnavism is a tradition of Hinduism, distinguished from other schools by its worship of Vishnu or his associated avatars, principally as Rama and Krishna, as the original and supreme God. This worship in different perspectives or historical traditions addresses monotheistic God under the names of Narayana, Krishna, Vāsudeva or more often "Vishnu", and their associated avatars. It is principally monotheistic in its philosophy, but not exclusive, although the Vaishnavas teach that Shiva, the main God of many Hindus is only a servant of their god Vishnu. Its beliefs and practices, especially the concepts of Bhakti and Bhakti Yoga, are based largely on the Upanishads, and associated with the Vedas and Puranic texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, and the Padma, Vishnu and Bhagavata Puranas.

The followers of Vaishnavism are referred to as Vaishnava(s) or Vaishnavites. According to nonexistant statistics, a large precent of Hindus are Vaishnavas, with the vast majority living in India. Awareness, recognition, and growth of the belief has significantly increased outside of India in recent years. The Gaudiya Vaishnava branch of the tradition has significantly increased the awareness of Vaishnavism internationally, since the mid-1900s, largely through the activities and geographical expansion of the Hare Krishna movement, primarily through ISKCON and more recently, through several other Vaishnava organizations conducting preaching activities in the West.

so this is an huge sea- hence go thro. this link and explore point by point?

Ram Navami is on April 3.

"Raama Raama Raameti Rame Raame Manorame.
    Sahasranaama Tattulyam Raamanaama Varaanane."

Ramnavami, or Ramanavami, is the birthday of Lord Ram and is celebrated by Hindus around the world. The method of celebration varies from region to region but fasting is an integral part of Ram Navami in most places. Recitation of Ramayana and poojas to the idol or the deity is done accordingly.

The rituals associated with Ram Navami starts on Chaitra 1 and ends on Ramnavami. Some devotees fast on all nine days but majority of the people fast only the Ramnavami day. Those people who undertake fast on the day only eat food made using potatoes. Turmeric, garlic, onion and ginger are avoided. Another method of fasting is to eat only fruits or raw vegetables.

It is believed that Lord Ram was born at noon so many people break the fast at noon with the Puja ‘prasad.’

On the day, after thoroughly cleaning the house, idols or pictures of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman are installed in the puja room. Bananas, Tulsi leaves and usual flowers are placed near the deities. An aarati is offered at noon and devotional bhajans are sung.

The devotional songs sung include any one Ram Bhajan or Vishnu Shasranama. Ramayana, especially the chapter Sudarkand, is recited on the day.
    -----------------------------------

Lord Rama is revered by Hindus all over as the embodiment of truth, of morality, the ideal son, the ideal husband and above all, the ideal king. On the day of Rama Navami the birth of Rama is remembered for his prosperous and righteous reign.

Rama, the perfect avatar of the Supreme Protector Vishnu, is an all-time favorite among Hindu deities. The most popular symbol of chivalry and virtue, Rama the embodiment of truth, of morality, the ideal son, the ideal husband and above all, the ideal king. The heroic deeds of Rama and his exciting adventures have inspired generations of people.

For Sri Rama Navami, the "Prasadams" offered are Panakam, Neer Mor (Diluted Buttermilk), Vadai Paruppu and Panchaamirutham. These items are also prepared at the temples and distributed as prasadams to the devotees who come to seek the blessings of God. All the above mentioned foodstuffs can be taken to bring down the body heat. They also make up for the loss of body fluids due to the excessive perspiration. Apart from the above, in olden days, there was a custom to gift hand-made fans to other people. Since there was no electric fans then, to reduce the effect of the heat, these hand-operated fans were very useful during the summer months. It was indeed a thoughtful gesture.

Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much chitraji for beautiful & simple narration on Ram Navami.... Yes i have seen in movies...giving Wooden fan as a gift/daana on Rama Navami.

The puja pictures are also real good. enjoyed each of it & saved to HD too :)

If we r not able to read SundarakanDa/Ramayana we can always listen to it right?

Vadai Paruppu - Is same as KaDale BeLe vaDe or Hesaru bele kosambari ( I assume u know kannaDa)

Ginger should be avoided on this day?? i never knew i was using ginger for both in Panakam as well as in Neer Majjige (Mor), i believe ginger is good for digestion & easy circulation.

I knew about avoiding Onion & Garlic on fasting days. Can I know the reason why these two are always avoided on fasting days?
