Kapaleshwarar Temple:The age of the temple is the source of much debate. The commonly held view is that the temple was built in the 7th century CE by the ruling Pallavas, based on references to the temple in the hymns of the Nayanmars (which however place it at the shore). It ia an example of the beautiful architecture ofPallavas Further, the architecture of the temple appears to be 300–400 years old. The scholarly view that accounts for the discrepancies is that the original temple was built on the shore at the location of the current Santhome Church but was destroyed by the Portuguese, and the current temple (which is 1-1.5 km from the shore) was built more recently. A small minority of people believe that the original temple was indeed on the beach, but that the sea has receded over centuries.

Vahanas: The vahanas at the temple include the bull, elephant, bandicoot, peacock, goat and parrot among others, while a golden chariot is a recent addition. The God and the Goddess is seated on the vahana and brought around the temple with the temple band playing music throughout this occasion. Devotees gather around the vahanas and consider it a privilege to lift the God and the Goddess on the vahana.

    Sri Maraghathavalli Thayar

Ariyathurai has an ancient temple for Lord Shiva, which is said to be about 6000 years old. The main deity here is Sri Varamoortheeswarar and Goddess Sri Maragatha Valli. The name of the place Ariyathurai itself signifies the inimitable value of the village. In Thamizh ‘Ariya’ means ‘rare’ and ‘Thurai’ means ‘a place on the river bank’.

This temple is located on the banks of the river Arani, which is also called as Brahmaaranya Theertham. According to the legend, this river is believed to be created by Lord Brahma. It is said that once when an ancient sage called Romasa Rishi wanted to perform a Yagnya, Lord Brahma churned the Arani trees to create fire. After the fire evolved from the friction, water started flowing due to churning, which ran through this place and came to be known as Brahmaaranya River. It is believed that Romasa Rishi worshipped the Lord here for over 100 years. Lord Shiva appeared to Him and the Rishi prayed the Lord to take abode here in Ariyathurai and bless the world. Lord Shiva was pleased with the Rishi’s worship and took abode here.

There was another sage called Mukundha Rishi who also is said to have stayed in this place for many years and worshipped the Lord here. After few years of worship, Mukundha Rishi wanted to go on a pilgrimage to Kaasi (Varanasi) and prepared to leave Ariyathurai. He heard a holy voice of Lord Shiva asking him not to leave Ariyathurai and said that the Holy Ganges will flow on the banks of Brahmaaranya River itself for the Rishi to take the holy dip. A small spring of water had originated on the banks of river Arani. Mukundha Rishi with much joy took holy dip in the Ganges and worshipped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva gave dharshan to him as Bhairavar. He requested Lord Shiva that the spring of Ganges should flow in this village perennially so that people who are not able to make it to Kaasi can visit Ariyathurai to have bath in Ganges. The Lord agreed and the spring of Ganges is flowing there till today.

There is a small square trench found on the river bank, a little away from the temple, in which the water is originating. It is said that even when the river Arani dries up, this holy Ganges fountain never dries. Kanchi Paramachaarya Sri Chandrasekarendhra Saraswathi Swamigal had visited Ariyathurai during 1965 and bathed in this holy water. It is said that worshipping the Lord at Ariyathurai is equivalent to worshipping Him at Kaasi (Varanasi).

There lived a king called Chithrasenan who was childless and Goddess Maragatha Valli Herself was born to him. After she grew up, the king arranged for the Swayamvaram for the princess. Lord Shiva went to the palace, brought the Goddess here on a horse and took abode. Knowing this, the king along with his troupes came chasing and reached here. Nandhigeswarar stopped them from entering the temple and the God gave dharshan to them along with Sri Maragatha Valli. Then the king was made to realize that the Goddess Herself was born to him and she had reached the right place.

There is an Arasa Maram (Peepul) near this temple. It is said that Lord Vishnu once brought a Paarijaatham tree from Devaloka to offer flowers to his wives. He took permission from the queen Indrani but forgot to ask the tree before transplanting it. The tree is said to have cursed Lord Vishnu to become a tree and stay on earth for 1000 years. Lord Vishnu is said to have stood here as Arasa Maram for about 1000 years.

There is a beautiful pond near the temple which serves as the Theertham for the temple. This temple tank was built by a local land lord. It is said that there lived a beautiful Devadasi in this village, who was an ardent devotee of Sri Varamoortheeswarar. The land lord was fascinated by her beauty and proposed to her for his pleasure. Devadasi agreed with a condition that the land lord must build a tank for this temple after which she would agree to be with him. The land lord fulfilled her wish by building a beautiful tank for the temple and went eagerly to meet her. To his shock, he was only able to find her dead to reach the feet of Lord.

The temple is constructed beautifully on the banks of river Arani. This temple is facing south. Temples facing south are called ‘Parihaara Sthalams’ meant for finding remedies to one’s problems. The main deity ‘Sri Varamoortheeswarar’ is seen facing east. Goddess Sri Maragatha Valli is facing south. The main deity here is said to represent the ‘Sadhyojaatha’ face of Lord Shiva. The Aavudaiyaar (base) of the Lingam is of square in shape. It is said that the Shiva Lingams which were installed by Rishis or Sages would have the Aavudaiyaar in square shape.

This temple does not have Navagrahams. Instead, Sri Surya Bhagavan (Sun God) and Sri Chandra Bhagavan (Moon God) are seen on the pillars just outside the sanctum, facing the Lord. Kaala Bhairavar is present in the Ardha Mandapam and is a Swayambhu murthy (self evolved). There are carvings of the images of snakes on the ceiling of the mandapam outside the sanctum, which indicates that this temple is meant to find remedies for Sarpa Dhosham or Naga Dhosham. An ancient Nandhi is seen on the outer praakaaram facing the sanctum. A stone slab containing some old inscriptions is kept on the outer praakaaram. There is also a small shrine for Romasa Rishi just behind the temple. Ariyathurai certainly lives up to its name having many rare features.
HOW TO REACH HERE? Ariyathurai village is located off the Chennai – Kolkata highway and is about 50 kms from Chennai. While going from Chennai, there is a junction called Thachur cross road. After crossing this junction, one has to go further about 2-3 kms to reach Kavarappettai where one Durga Devi Polytechnic is seen. Opposite to this polytechnic, one has to take a left turn from the highway and go about 3 kms inside to reach this temple.

Koyambedu Sri Kurungaaleeswarar and Dharmasamvardhini amman

This is an ancient temple for Lord Shiva located in Koyambedu,Chennai, proceed towards poonamallee at the koyambedu flyover. After about 100 metres just before the Sridevi hospital is a small road leading you to the temple. you may miss the road if you are not careful. Once inside the road you find the huge temple complex with ample parking space.

The temple, which faces north, has a three-tier Rajagopuram. The holy water source is situated in front of the temple and the jackfruit tree is the "sthala vriksham".
This area was called Kusa lava puri where Lava and Kusa grew up in valmiki’s ashram at this place. The main deity is Sri Kurungaaleeswarar and Goddess Sri Dharmasamvardhani (also called Aram Valartha Naayagi). The temple is supposed to have been built by kulathunga chola III and has the gajaprishti vimanam style. In addition there are many wonderful sculptures around When Sri Rama sent the Aswamedha horse around the country, Lava and Kusa brought the horse to their custody. Without knowing that it was His sons who captured the horse, Sri Rama sent Lakshmana who fought a battle with them. As Lava and Kusa fought against their own uncle, they acquired a Dhosham called Gothra Dhosham. To be relieved of it, it is said that, they installed and worshipped Lord Shiva in this place.

As you enter in front of you is the amman sannidhi and the main sannidhi is to your right. The main sannidhi has a tiny sivalingam as it was built by tiny tots Lava and Kusa. The Aram Valartha Naayagi sanidhi adjacent has a 3-4 feet amman in the standing pose. Just out side is the Vinayagar sannidhi a feature of the idol is that her left foot is projected forward. It is said that a demon lived in the area and the goddess put her left foot forward before leaving her abode to kill him. (One is asked to put his right foot forward before leaving for auspicious functions. It may be mentioned that Anjaneya, before entering Lanka, also put his left foot forward, according to the Ramayana.)

    Bhuvaneshwari Devi

Sri Bhuvaneswari devi is the main Deity in the temple. The primordial energy (Sakthi) in the female form, is known by various names such as Rajarajeswari, Aadhi Parasakthi and Jagadamba. Rajarajeswari has ten different aspects such as Kali, Thara, Shodasi etc. One of these aspects is Bhuvaneswari. Bhuvanam means the universe; Eswari means the ruler. She rules the universe according to Her will. In other words, the whole universe belongs to Her.Her powers extend throughout the universe. She is also the controller of Maaya. In human beings, she exists as Kundalini Sakthi and Sabthabrahmam.

The name of Bhuvaneshwari mentioned in the part of Hindu philosophy called Tantra, the religious literature expounding the worship of the Divine Mother. The tantric works describe ten aspects of Shakti (Mahavidya), the universal energy. The term Mahavidya means 'great knowledge' or wisdom. Each of these ten great deities is an outstanding personality of the Divine who bestows or reveals spiritual knowledge.Bhuvaneshwari is the fourth major power described in the Tantras. Bhuvaneshwari stands for the concept of space. Space has many levels of manifestation: The space of the physical Universe and the space of the mind. Just as there are many layers of space in the Universe, there are many layers in the higher levels of the mind. In our body, the heart is where the infinite space of the Universe resides, and this is the seat of the Divine Mother, Bhuvaneshwari, who represents this Space. By creating space, we release ourselves from stress and tension.

In certain temples, the goddess revealing a representation of Kali, the intense aspect of our Divine Mother. It is because both are intimately connected as representing time and space, which made creation possible. Kali arranges the timing of the cosmic dance while Bhuvaneshwari stands for the original space before creation in which Kali's cosmic dance takes place.
Her Bheeja is 'Hreem'which is as powerful as ‘Aum'.Hrim’ connects the space within the heart with the infinite, vast space of Consciousness. The mantra 'Hreem' is known as Sakthi Pranavam.‘ Hreemkara finds its place in various Upanishads - such as Bhavanopanishad, Sowbhagya Lakshmi Upanishad, Sri Sooktham and other prayers. In Lalitha trisathi, Hreem is used in 29 places for glorifying Goddess Bhuvaneswari. She is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and Siva.

Bhuvaneswari always appears with a smiling face. She has 4 hands; two of which bless the devotees. She carries weapons such as Paasam (for control of desire) and Angusam (for control of anger). Her smiling face is meant to cheer-up devotees for happiness. She is always well dressed, bedecked with Jewelry and gems of various kinds. Scriptures describe Her as brighter than thousand Suns, and wearing a crescent moon on Her crown. She is variously described as the brightness of thousand suns, beauty of peacock and parrot, nectar in a flower, ruby among gems and Ganga among rivers.

She resides at Manidweepam, which was created out of Her own thought. Manidvipam consists of several forts, made of several materials - consisting of common metals on the outside, silver, gold, sapphire, Topaz, pearl, corals and emerald in the interior. The Manidweepam is guarded by eight Gods-such as Indira, Agni, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera etc.

    STORY OF MOTHER BHUVANESHWARI
Mythology tells us that in the beginning, Surya, the sun, appeared in the heavens. In order to create the world, the sages offered soma (a sacred plant) to the sun. The sun was pleased and through the power of Shakti, He created the three worlds (Bhuvanas. Having created the worlds, the goddess assumed the form of Bhuvaneshwari and ruled and protected them.

Goddess Bhuvaneswari is a symbol of beauty and grace. She represents knowledge and intelligence. She is the giver of wealth, health and happiness. Devotional songs say that Bhuvaneshwari is like Saraswathi, the goddess of learning, wisdom and knowledge. She is described as "Jnana Swaroopa," the highest form of wisdom. It is also said that Bhuvaneshwari has so much power that a mere glance from Her gives boons to the goddesses Lakshmi, Parvathi and Saraswathi. She confers confidence, sympathy, beauty and wisdom on them because all these qualities are within Her.Prayers offered to her remove sorrows. Sins are forgiven by Her. By praying Her, birth less state and Moksha are obtained.

    About Temple
Kunnatheri is a place coming under Choornikkara panchayath and is situated 4 km away from Aluva town. People in this palce people belong to three major religions. But the people in christian religion are very few. Though the major portions of the population belong to Hindu religion they had no worship centre for
In 2003, The Hindus in Kunnatheri were devotees of of Devi for many years.
The astrolegers informed the people that the installation at this place will have an intense manifestation of Devi Bhuvaneshwari.
As part of the installation at the Temple, various rituals have been done to energize and charge the vigraha of Devi Bhuvaneshwari. The vigraha has been made with krishnasila. As directed by Kshetra Shilpi, Astrollegers and Thantri, Bhuvaneshwari took place on July , 2003 and the mandala pooja was completed on December 30th, 2005. This is an event of tremendous significance, as Hindus in this place had no centre for worshiping for several years.

It was Parasakthi’s wish to be with us here at this place and Her will has been realized. We are truly fortunate to have Her in our place and the spiritual and a wordly benefit, which devi can bless us with, is immense.
Let us, therefore, thank Divine Providence for the singular grace and salutary opportunity that has been afforded to us by the opening at Kunnatheri of this auspicious new temple! And let us praise the Great Goddess with all our hearts, assuring her of our unflagging devotion, and imploring her blessings upon us.

    Worship
The only worship centre for Hindus in this place.Beyond the common vazhipadu, Muttiyirakkal is the main vazhipadu in this temple. Many people from far away place used to came for this vazhipadu.
Those seeking the supreme peace should invoke and worship the Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, who is the power of infinite ‘expansion’, peace and equanimity. Worship of the Great Goddess bestows peace and joy upon the worshipper, and brings him or her bounteous merit. The Goddess can fulfill all our needs, and is ever ready to remedy even our greatest afflictions. Indeed, by worshipping the Goddess one can bring immeasurable benefit to one’s loved ones, as well as to oneself, even to the extent of rescuing them from various hells and carrying them thence to the paradise of Manidvipa. This was the marvelous outcome of Maharaja Janamejaya’s worship of Bhuvaneswari Devi, for, after duly adoring her in the manner prescribed for this purpose by Vyasa, his late father’s soul was released from naraka and ascended to the Goddess’s Jeweled Island.
Truly, the benefits of worshipping Mother Bhuvaneswari are limitless and practically indescribable! Those who adore the Goddess with pure and selfless bhakti, discerning the truth of non-duality at all times, perceiving and serving the Goddess in all, and cherishing nothing as much as they do serving her, attain sayujya moksha, highest liberation.

    Ashwarooda Devi

    [IMG]ASHWAROODA DEVI

Sri Lalita-Maha-Tripurasundari Devi created Ashwarooda Devi from "Pasa-Banam" in her hand. She is always alighted on her Horse and heads the Forces of Horses. The Horse which she rides is called as "Aparajita" literally meaning "The Invincible" or which cannot be won-over by anyone. The Five Physical senses like our eyes etc. are these Horses. The Devi riding these horses represents our Mind or Manas. Thus she controls Millions of Minds in this Universe. Worship of this Devi gives us Control of our Mind and thus also our Physical Senses...

    Sree Sampatkari Devi

    “SREE SAMPATHKARI DEVI”<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
“ Sampathkari Samaaruda Sindhura Vrja Sevitha ”
Sri Lalita-Maha-Tripurasundari after creating her army from her own forces, created Four Devis from her own weapons of Pasa ( Noose ), Ankusa ( Goad ), Ikshu-Kodanda ( Bow ) and Panja Bana ( Arrows ).

From Pasa or Noose emerged “Sree Aswarooda Devi” to head the Cavalry of Horses.
From Ankusa or Goad emerged “Sree Sampatkari Devi" to head the Elephant Forces.
From Ikshukothanda emanated “Sree Mantrini Devi" to become the Minister.
From Pancha-Bana arose “Sree Dandini or Varahi Devi" and she became the Chief of all the Armies of the Devi.
The Ankusa ( Elephant Goad ) held in Para-Devi’s hand represents both “Krodha” and “Gnana”. Devi created “Sree Sampathkari Devi” from this Ankusa and made her the head of the Elephant Forces. According to Devi-Mahatmya, “Sree Sampathkari Devi” confronted the Asura Durmada along with thousands of elephants in herds eventually defeating him. The elephant on which she rides is called “RANAKOLAHALAM”. Elephant represents wealth. Hence the worship of Sree Sampatkari Devi brings forth wealth.
What does any Experience do ? When it is enjoyable and a memorable one, it creates happiness within us. The word “Sampath” actually depicts the Inner Peace or Fulfillment obtained subsequent to any enjoyable experience.
Tripudi is Gnana, Gnatru & Gnyeyam, namely the Knowledge, the Learner and the Subject learnt. “Suga-Sampatkari” is actually the Inner Knowledge of the Higher Self which distinguishes these three essentials as separate entities and helps for application or proper use of the external and internal senses for attaining Peace and Happiness.
Thus though “Sampathkari Devi” represents this Inner Joy, she actually directs our Mind towards the Experience first but also regulates the activity of all the Physical Senses.
An “Ankusa” though small can tame even a mighty Elephant. Similarly “Sree Sampathkari Devi “ represents the Restriction of the Physical self required for the Task of controlling our emotions and Senses and thus evolves an Experience. Goad only restricts the Self from striding into evil ways as it controls the elephant and is not meant for driving the Senses into Indulgence like an elephant in “heat”. Thus though our Mind can act independently and also in Speed, it must be restricted and aimed towards obtaining the Inner Peace after the control of Physical Senses.
We can thus deduce that “Ankusa” which is a form of “Krodha” or “Anger” is actually used to obtain “Gnana” or “Knowledge” though Tranquility and Mental Peace obtained by the controlled and appropriate use of our Sense organs.
