hi vaidehi,

good post.

i have many favourite keerthanais. infact carnatic music itself is my favourite.

right now i would like to quote "Unnaiyallal Veregadhi Illai Ama" written by Late Sri Papanasan Sivan who is called Tamizh Thiagayyar.

The song is based on female Goddess Karpagambal of Thirumylai (Mylapore). Ragam is Kalyanai. Since I have learnt this in Veena, I enjoy playing it.

Vaidehi,

Nice discussion. It is said, that some time back a few musicians selected these five keerthanai's to be sung in the tyagayyar aradhanai ,and it has been followed ever since.

But whoever selected these five songs are great...they are all beautiful compositions....

All of them are versatile and great...and if you understand the meaning it is a more greater feeling..

1.Jagadananda Karaka - Raga Nata...
2.Dudukugala - Raga Gaula
3.Sadhinchene - Raga Arabhi
4.Kanakana Ruchira - Raga Varali
5.Endaro Mahanubhavulu - Raga Sri

I like dudukugala for the way tyagayya asks for shamarpanam and blessings of Rama for all his sins. The way he lists his sins really touches a chord in you.

I like it sung by M.S.S. and then Balamurali krishna.

I also like endaro.....

Let us keep discussing.

Vanaja,

I would definitely love to hear the recital. It is one of our favourites. My MIL used to sing it all the time.now my FIL sings in his bajans.. Even mahalakshmi (shankarabharanam).
another favourite of mine is Naan oru vilayattu bommaiyya - navarasa kaanada...
Srinivasa thiru venkata....hamsanandi...is a very soulful one...I love that rendition by Bombay Jayashree... and another one...Karunanidhiye- li..she has done a great justice to the song..
Let me stop it here...

Shanvy,

You have a good taste.

I have Maharajapuram Santhanam's voice for Unnaiyallal.

Srinivasan Thiruvenkata is my favourite and I play in Veena too. Same Hamsanandhi - Pavana Guru Pavana Gura. K.J. Yesudas sings it well.

Swaminatha Paripalaya Sumam - Nattai by Dhikshitar is also my favourite. I love to play it in Veena. Nattai sounds great in instruments.

Hi Vaidehi,
Nice thread. I like Jagadanandha karaga and Endharo Mahanubhavulu. I also like Sadhinchane and Dudukugala. But I am wondering if I have ever heard Kanakana Ruchira. Will try to search online and hear the song today or tomorrow.

Sindhu,

The raga varali is thought to bring in misunderstanding between a guru and shishya. so it is rarely taught by the teacher. and this song kanakana ruchira is mostly sung at aradhanas . It is actually drawing a link between dhruva and ramayana.

it is a nice rendition.

Vanaja,

yes pavana guru kjy sings well...

And unnai allal I have listened to sirgazhi and maharajapuram.
