    Hello ILS

This is summer season, we will get loads and loads of watermelon, but after having the fruit we will throw the white portion instead we can make use of it and make many recipies like sambar, poriyal and also halwa. In this thread I will discuss about how to do water melon sambar.

Scrap the green part (outer covering) out and cut the white part into small cubes. Now add oil and mustard, in the kadai, and then add bengal gram and black gram, fry the onions, tomato, water melon cubes, asafoetida along with it. Dont forget to add asafoetida because the fruit may cause cold, if we add asafoetida it will not let you cold. Then as usual add toor dhal , salt, turmeric, chilli powder and little tamarind paste for taste.
Another method to do sambar is fry the cubes with asafoetida and keep it in pressure cooker and allow one whistle, now it will become so soft, then as usual the sambar procedure where children can swallow it easily.

As the vegetables prices are soaring high this can be used one day when you buy water melon. For sure your family members will be surprised if you say that you made it from waste of the water melon.:cheers. Friends try this out and give your feed back.

    Hi Aruna,

That was a novel thought !! sambar made with watermelon pieces are good for health also ... even diabetics can take..

We can try to make kootu also with moong dal / toor dal as we make with pumpkin ...
We can pressure cook the white portion of watermelon with moongdal, with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Just garnish with mustard, curry leaves, red chillies. Or grind a table spoon of cocnut, greenchillies and cumin seeds and add the paste . Bring the mixture to a boil and garnish with mustard and curry leaves, ..
