My kids love their aunt's IDLI PODI and they keep asking me to make it the same way.

It is really yummy and worth making it for your kids. I am sure they will have their idlis/dosas and even chappathis with idli podi ....without being fussy.

    2 cups - Thuvar dal
    1 1/4 cup - Urad dal
    3/4 cup - Raw Rice
1 1/4 cup - pottukadalai (roasted channa dal)
    handful - channa dal
    handful - Jeera
    2 tablesp - pepper (kurumilagu)
    salt -as required
    asofoetida -a pinch
curry leaves - a lot ( the more the better)

(ps-here we dont use red chillies..we use pepper instead)

Dry roast all the above one by one till it changes colour slightly and a good aroma comes.

salt and asofoetida to be added along with curry leaves in the hot kadai after switching of the flame. (till the leaves look slightly dry)

    Grind well in a mixie.

    Store in airtight container.

Serve with coconut oil or gingelly oil.

    Pepper benefits:
    Source : web (ezine articles)

    Possible Benefits of Black Pepper:
    · Alleviates hemorrhoids

    · Alleviates gas

    · Alleviates constipation

    · Improves digestion - just think, by grinding or shaking black pepper onto your meal, you may actually be aiding yourself in the digestion of that meal. How? Black pepper stimulates the taste buds, alerting your stomach to increase its hydrochloric acid secretion which aids in digestion.

    · Alleviates loss of appetite - again, black pepper wakes up and stimulates your taste buds.

    · Promotes sweating

    · Promotes urination

    · Anti-bacterial effect

    · Anti-oxidant effect

    · Stimulates the breakdown of fat cells

    · Inhaling vapor from black pepper extract may reduce withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking - this theory is still being tested...

    · Piperine - an alkaloid found in black pepper - could enhance the bioavailability of some nutritional substances and drugs. It also may have anti-carcinogenic properties and anticonvulsant

    Ya it is yummy.
I use some red chillis too. Next time try with pepar.
Here my dils parents had send her some podi with somebody from their place and it is sure no redchillis and only peper, because they are from the land of peper cultivating and that too tastes good.

    Your recipe sounds yummy.
As my dh and Ds loves spicy podi..i usually prepare two different varieties.
One with normal ingredients(as you said above,,devoid of fried gram,aw rice and pepper) with dried chillie.
and the other with more of curry leaves and fired gram.less spicy.
    Goes well with oothappam...
    THANKS.
