    Glascobaby,
There is no proportion in this...
Soak the rice and grind it smooth and use it with a piece of cloth to do the kolams.
Some say add a little bit of maida to the maavu so that the kolam will stay for long.

    To Both Sriniketan & Glascobaby,
You can make the readymade way also. Its like when you have time grind the soaked rice and pour it on the wooden plate or if you have a butter paper place it on any flat surface. let it get hard under the sun. then break them into big chunks. keep it in a box. whenever you want just take one or two soak it in water and can use it immediately. its the age old tradition in our family. I am the fouth generation to use this technique.

No problem, glascobaby! You can even do with the available...store-bought rice flour...add water to it and proceed..

    Meena,
Now I remember those chunks my grandma and mother used to make..very good idea isn't it!.. nice to see you are taking it to the fifth generation.

    Beeamma,
I think there is no need to soak for long hours..just one or two will do..

Dear Sriniketan, you are right. My MIL also appreciated me a lot for carrying it further to the next generation. Thanks for your encouragement. I really do it when the last cup of rice is there. mostly it will be with chuncks so I make it like that. This is also copied from my mom only. no own ideas... dabba gul...

    Dear Glascobaby,
Its really a cool idea. adding more to it. Oe of my friend adds foof colour for the kola maavu. it turned out very nice. but if you are in a vaadagai veedu its difficult i suppose, coz it leaves the stain on the floor. but we can do it on a big plate or a wooden tray.
