Hello all, we have all heard of positive affirmations. According to our culture, we are to take bath early in the morning and chant. If only we understood the meaning of the Sanskrit slokas we were chanting! With this driving me, I started looking up the meaning of some slokas I know of. I realised that the meanings are so profound that they bring forth such bliss and seem to give access to deeper parts of my brain. Then I realised these slokas were just positive affirmations which both ground us with their message is humility (by believing in a higher power) and help us reach for the stars with conviction. i am but a mere novice in this. The internet has lots of information. I was wondering if you all would like to create a repository here with some of your favourite slokas - giving its translation. Sincerely, G
This is such a nice thread, I wonder why it went unnoticed for so long. We were taught some sanskrit shlokas since childhood, and fortunately always with their meaning. We would always recite the shlokas along with their meaning, same with bhajans as well. These are some of the verses we were taught in the temple during our weekly classes. First thing before every class we would have to recite all the 4 shlokas along with their meanings. Bhagvad Gita chapter 10.8 aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate iti matva bhajante mam budha bhava samanvitah Translation Lord Krishna says- I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in my devotional service worship me with all their hearts
Bhagvad Gita chapter 10.9 mac citta mad gata prana bodhyantah parasparam kathayantas ca mam nityam tusyanti ca ramanti ca Translation Lord Krishna says- The thoughts of my pure devotees always dwell in me, their lives are fully devoted to my service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about me.
Bhagvad Gita chapter 10.10 tesam satata yuktanam bhajatam priti purvakam dadami budhi yogam tam yena mam upayanti te Translation Lord Krishna says- To those who are constantly devoted and worship me with love, I give them the understanding by which they can come to me.
Bhagvad Gita chapter 10.11 tesam evanukampartham aham ajnana jam tamah nasayamy atma bhavastho jnana dipena bhasvata Translation Lord Krishna says- To show them special mercy, I dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.
my brother used to say chanting slokas are just giving power to our mind, body and soul so that our thoughts are always positive and when thoughts are positive naturally we will get success.
Thank you, thegirlygirl. The slokas from the Gita are wonderful. It calms me down to read verses and the meanings you have given. I learnt to recite some from the second chapter and the fifteenth chapter. Never got around to learn the meanings, back then. Orchidb, quite true what your brother says! One sloka whose meaning I loved the second I read it is this: Om, Sahana-vavatu, Sahanau-bhunaktu, Saha-virya-karva-vahaye, Tejasvi-nava-dhi-tamastu, Ma-vidvisha-vahaye. Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. Om, May Lord protect us, May He cause us to enjoy, May we exert together, May our studies be thorough and faithful, May we never quarrel with each other. Om Peace Peace Peace This is from a document someone sent me, created by Viswa Hindu Parishad, America. It has the slokas in the devanagri script, English and the meanings in English.
The following is a verse from the bhagvad Gita Chapter 9.26 patram pushpam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayachhati tad aham bhakty upahritam asnami prayatatmanah Translation Lord Krishna- If one offers me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it. A nice way to teach our kids to be vegetarians!
