Default Visiting temple during the periods?

Is it a sin to enter the temple during periods? Leave the sin part, is it scientifically also ok to do so?

I always think that these 'periods' untouchability concept are all man made. Though I had not done this wantedly, there were situations where I had done this (eg., when Lord Ganesha drank milk, once inside Balaji temple where I got it during the queue, another time in ISCKON temple and Meenakshi temple in Houston, where I would have lost the opportunity of seeing the Lord, otherwise. I dont know why but am definitely not feeling good at what I had done... any thoughts?

The idol is the Bimba(mirror) which contains the Divine Presence. It is the sukshma deha (subtlebody) while the prasada is the sthula deha or gross body of the Almighty. Any form of impurity or doshas reduces or wears the Divine Presence. Hence strict vigilance is observed to maintain the purity of the temple and the temple premises. Prashna Marga lists out the impurities and doshas which includes all human excretory matter including sweat and perspiration, The emphasis on maintaining the cleanliness and purity of the temple is very high.

Women having menses are 'unclean', that's why they are not allowed to worship. The reason for this is that they take part in the results of Indra's being cursed for his sins. Not entering a holy place when a woman is in periods is basically because a woman’s body is not hygienic, clean and holy when she is continuously giving out blood and the dirt from her body through the menstruation flow. A woman’s body is highly vibrant in periods. A woman is also highly susceptible to any infection when she is in her menstruation phase. Thus if a woman in periods enters a holy or sacred place or a temple, there are high chances of the infection, that she is carrying, to be spread in the holy ambience of the temple, spoiling the purity of that place. This was about the physical aspect why a woman must not enter any holy place in periods as per the Hindu Mythology.

    Hope it clears....
    Sorry if wrong.....

Thanks for the response. But very sorry that I cannot agree to some of the thoughts. Impurity and dosha is in one's heart and not in physical form, at least in this kali yuga. Those days women may be literally unclean during the periods as there were limited scope for maintaining hygene or taking bath, etc. but that no more applies to the modern days. Scientifically, the blood coming out during periods is not 'unclean' and all. It is also a part of pure blood only. When it is required for the most sacred deed of bearing a child, am damn sure that all these hi-fis about women and her periods are all man-made. History re-written to suit the tales.

Agree on the vibrant part. I dont know much about the 'infection' part also.
Here, am not questioning the Hindu religion at all, as I myself a god fearing person. But, the very fact of crushing a woman in the name of periods is not acceptable for me. I entered the Houston temple out of love to see Meenakshi Devi, otherwise I would have lost the opportunity. I always treat Lord Ganesh as my own friend. I entered out of love for Ganesha to see the miracle that is performing which otherwise I would have missed to see. Because of the God fear, I am forced to believe in all these 'doshams', 'papams', etc. which kind of makes me worry.

Sorry if I had hurt you. But please do show me your insights. I mean your own, and not through the tradition or myth, etc.

    Sorry...I never take it serious....
I have always the faith in each and every movement, and I am firm that the same is fixed already...
I have already told both the significance either medically or on religious part too..

    Now on Astrological part..
It all depends on one how its being aspected...
If you aspect in a Good way, the path is good...
If you aspect in a -ve way, the path is -ve....
It all depends on the Mind set, as Moon and mars is the significator for the monthly cycles...

The SthUla dega and the Sareera are reprsented by the Mars and Moon in the Transit period of these two planets....Once will have Menstural cycles if the transit moon is deposited on the 4-7-8 houses from Natal mars, which makes the changes in the body, and the cycles are formed....
It cannot be stopped from the age of 13 to 50 or +/- upto the menopause period.
Its all not in our hands.. Its all pre decided... the discharge of ovum with the blood is caused by the Mars again... where the 4th house, 7th house and 8th house when moon is deposited will have the Malefic aspect.

Hence, astrologically, the cleanliness or what ever you call the cycles, will have a negative impact on the Native itself and on the atmosphere around you....

    Sorry If I am wrong....
    Regards

I personally feel there is nothing like that says 'you should not go and visit temple when you have periods' -
Nature created humans and humans created these rules on their needs.

Tomorrow we humans for our needs will come up with our own new rules that's how we got lot of Shri shri...and weak people will follow them and if someone raises voice against to that...u know what happens to him

If women is not allowed to go temple in her periods then she shouldn't go to workplace too...she will get infected...as long as women is keeping her body hygiene and clean nothing will happens.

What i mean to conclude here is ; it is all in our mind which are stuck by our ancestors ( we don't go with why they did like that and all)...now we are educated and independent and can think what is good and bad for us.
If you are good to others then your heart is pure and you won't worry about is it bad to go temple and all as u know nothing will happen when you haven't done anything bad here.

In fact I sometime wonder why to go temple when we pray in home...God at home is not sufficient?

Just be good , think good and do good ...God Blesses all

    Dear Tuffy,

Well.. Nice article n question for Hindu ladies to turn over n stop n bit to think it over....

The fact is, when we have menstrual cycle, they made us to take rest in earlier days n at those time, they wont take bath, coz, the body should have that heat at that time... If we take bath, the heat may reduce, that's what they take bath only in the fourth day n only from that day their hubby can go near them.. The 4th day is really auspicious also.

Also, that's the reason they ask us not to take cool food or cool fruits r cool juices at that time.. that heat has to be maintained for the initial 3 days... it's good for the body of us, but not for others... only who has that day as menstrual cycle needed it, none others, that's why they made us not to mingle that time with others, but utilize our energy ourselves by being alone that time.... it's good to do naama japa at that time to attain maximum benefit at that time...

As a girl, we are able to bear that much heat, it's god who created us with a lot of power n energy(Shakthi - all women).. But, who is doing pooja in temple? Male... He by birth dont have that much power to resist or accept this much heat in the body....

Also, even in females, we have various degrees of heat n energy at various time as per the body condition, external climate n our mind matters mostly... so, who dont have menstrual cycle is not able to bear that heat n vibration at that part of time... they can bear it only when they have their own cycle, not all the time....

To be more clear, apart from our physical body, we have energy body. Both are interlinked.. what one have is represented in the other also. When our physical body has heat, obviously our casual body(energy body) also has that heat in it.... That's not able to be tolerated scientifically by males r the one with weak energy bodies(though being females) as well as not able to be tolerated by the female energy bodies also who dont have menstrual cycle at that time..... That's what it's better to not enter temple as well as houses r to workplace or anywhere for those initial 3 days when the heat energy is too much unbearable in energy level not certainly understandable in gross physical level. That's what we r made to take rest at that time. But, since we r much away from our own inner self, we r not able to recognize our own aura/casual body n the effects associated with it... so instead of accepting the great tradition, we r questioning it... It's good to question... but most of us r just not only questioning but ready to leave it n just follow the western culture... Sorry to think all these being a true indian....

But, after being modern n copying the westerners, we also started straining our own, by having separate family rather than joint family, so automatically we r pushed not to take rest n to work at home even during the menstrual cycle. So, our mind started asking, when i pushed to work, when i m pushed to do all my duties, why not inside temple alone?

The real temple is inside ourself.. We r made to take rest at that time to gain more energy at that time(
which our innerself(God) is supplying us that time)... but instead, rather than gaining more energy at that time, we waste it by being as usual. It's our fault, not the tradition r cultures' part. Do they ask u to work at that time? no... only our house members r demanding... it's to be changed not the golden culture n tradition...

Atleast, let us all from now try to understand n pass it clearly down to our children, so that atleast next generation will follow all the golden tradition with clear view rather than the confusion which we face in our lifetime....

Also, Amirthanantha mayi matha used to tell, since negative aura is what we u feel u get at that time, rather than being away from temples, just inside urself, (which is the real temple) do as much naama japa u can at that time to purify urself.... Heat is true n scientific.. The heat can both create n destroy. The menstrual heat gives a bit destructive heat... u can practically experience it by being near the plants.. those plants suffer if u go near n touch it during ur menstrual cycle... why? Bcoz of the negative heat... at the same time, the light n heat from the sun is what is growing a plant? So, it's able to bear the positive heat, but not the negative heat from us ladies... Got the point.... That's the reason, they say us not to touch the kids also at the time to the maximum.... Please try to analyse well n indepth our tradition n try to pass it over...

Why they created temples n rules? only to question n turn within at onetime... all the things in the temple is true... how? when u go inside self realization, that will become clear at that time one by one.... The temple is the model for us in self realization... only self realized souls made the temple... not the poojaris who r doing pooja there... if u question them, sorry they cant answer any of ur doubts....

Hope this helps clearing ur doubt atleast a bit if not completely.. both traditionally n scientifically...

If u look into chinese explanation, they r clear in explaining this... Due to religious confusions, we forget the rule why it starts..... we thinking modernised, r ready to break all the old age customs naming that we r more modernized... really not.... they r modernized, but later ruined up due to many multinational wars.... now, we who r the remains of the mixed culture, dont know whats the original version n what's the mixed up version r landed in real trouble.

In old age, when they really know why, they followed it. Later, when passing it down to later generation, due to their own mental trouble due to national trouble, all the customs are followed without explanation... that's what made us to question everything..... really sad part for all the indians....

Anyway, now we r all independent. Please try to analyze clearly. If u have any doubts in my input, pls pass it on. If i go wrong anywhere, pls. intimate that too... so that i too can clear myself. Have a nice day.

    wishes n regards,

    S. Sriumadevi Srinivasan.

I am reminded of the statement by the Nobel laureate Prof Venkatraman Ramakrishnan at his recent public lecture in Chennai. I am paraphrasing- energy has a precise meaning within science, and talk about negative and positive energy in other contexts is just hot air.

Let us not continue to convert natural phenomena into pathological conditions.

Menstruation is natural and there is nothing dirty about it. If at all there is any infection around, it is the woman who needs protection, not others from her. With modern day hygiene knowledge and products and availability of running water, this is a non-issue.
