Angry Sex Selection and "Paro"

The Indian fascination for the male child is of course well known. In many parts of rural India, there are umpteen Ultrasound clinics and nursing homes which will reveal the sex of the foetus.
Once you know the sex of the unborn foetus, the expectant mother is either cajoled or brainwashed into aborting the foetus. Here again, there are plenty of abortion clinics quite willingly to do the needful for a price.
But Mother Nature extracts her own price. If no one wants a daughter, who will wed your sons!
In fact it is quite difficult to get a bride in certain districts of Haryana, Rajasthan and Western UP. Brides are then arranged from states like Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. These brides go by the name of “paro”.

Lightbulb Re: Sex Selection and "Paro"

Dear Raminder
I think you are right. The sex ration of Haryana is about 770 girls to 1000 boys. The practice of Paro is rampant in Mewat district of Haryana, pockets of Bharatpur and Alwar in Rajasthan and certain areas of Western UP.
I have heard of the “Paro “phenomenon. There are a few thousand Paro brides in the village of Nuh, Hathin , Punhana and nearby areas of Haryana.
Most of the “Paro” brides come from impoverished families of states like Bihar, Bengal and Orissa. The depleting sex ratio of the region and the need for brides has given rise to "agents" who will procure a bride for you for a price.

All this makes me very sad. Think of all the foetuses aborted ... and all the girls from other states, married to an unknown guy who doesn't even speak your language.
