Default Bhangra Dance

Bhangra is a lively form of folk music and dance that originates from Punjab. Punjabis performed Bhangra to celebrate the sucess of the harvest. People perform Bhangra on the day of Baisakhi, April 13. Bhangra is considered the king of dances.

During Bhangra, people sing Punjabi Boliyaan lyrics, at least one person plays the the dhol drum. The dancers begin to move in a circle around the drummer, who now and then lifts the two sticks, with which he beats the drum, to beckon the dancers to a higher tempo of movement.

Did anyone ever take part in this dance?

This festival is celebrated on the Krishna amavasya (last day of the dark half of the month) of Jyestha and on the day married women worship Savitri and the Bat or banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) and pray for the well being of their spouses. Women observe fast in honour of Savitri and Satyavan and remember how Savitri through her intense devotion saved her husband from the claws of death.

I never have taken part in this dance but I would be glad to know others experience.

Today bhangra is not just a dance form, but a term that embraces a new form of music. Initially it was a dance performed to celebrate a good harvest.

Soon it was not just confined to the harvest time but found its place at weddings and almost all other celebratory occasions.

It looked beyond the boundaries of Punjab with its inclusion in innumerable Bollywood films.

Personally, I like this dance very much..
