Mask dances are a part and parcel of the Buddhist festivals especially the Mahayana tradition which still exists in Bhutan. As part of the holy scripts, the masked dance of the Buddhists dates back to the 8th century when the Chham Dance was first performed.
Participation by the monks at Lahul, Spiti, Ladakh and Kinnaur made the masked dance drama a jolly experience. The main objective behind this masked dance drama is to appease the deity. It is also performed in order to drive off the evil spirits and protect the people from the deadly natural calamities, epidemics and also to ensure health and hygiene for the people.

The masks worn by the lamas during the dances represent guardian divinities from the Dringungpa pantheon. As in the case of other monastic festivals, the sacred dance - drama concludes with the destruction of the sacrificial offerings. Devotees come by the hundreds to witness the celebration.

I am also planning to go to Yuru Kabgyat (Lamayuru). Just wondering what is the best--as in cheap and easy--way to get there. Also, what kind of accomodations are there in Lamayuru?
Thanks for the help, But please do let me know

Lamayuru, a spectacular village steeped in legend is situated in Leh District, Jammu and Kashmir. Perched at an altitude of 3390 above the sea level, this beautiful hamlet is situated along the Leh-Srinagar highway. Lamayuru is 125 km west of Leh.
Major point of attraction here is the Lamayuru Monastery. Numerous man-made caves carved out of the mountainside, is worth a visit.
Do you know the legend behind it?
