The festival signifies a change of session. According to Hindu religious texts, on this day of Uttarayani, the sun enters the Zodiacal sign of Makar (Capricorn) from the Zodiacal sign of Kork (Cancer). From this day onwards the sun becomes “Uttarayan” or it moves towards the north. Makar Sankranti as popularly known as Ghughutia or Kale Kauva in Uttaranchal is celebrated with singing, dancing and wearing new clothes.

This festival is celebrated on the Krishna amavasya (last day of the dark half of the month) of Jyestha and on the day married women worship Savitri and the Bat or banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) and pray for the well being of their spouses. Women observe fast in honour of Savitri and Satyavan and remember how Savitri through her intense devotion saved her husband from the claws of death.

The banyan tree is regarded as a holy tree. According to legend, Satyavan took shelter under a banyan tree when death was approaching him. They pray to it so that their husbands may be happy, healthy and prosperous.

This festival is celebrated each year on Krishna Amavasya (the last day of the dark half of the month) in the month of Jyestha. This corresponds to the month of June according to the English Calendar.
