Amazing !!!!!!!!!! Lakshmi Nair (Kairali TV) had mentioned about this place in detail in one of her shows-Flavours of India !!!! I browsed to know more ....sharing with you all !!

As a testimonial to the mythological belief that the Sun is the father of River Yamuna,Yamuothri houses a hot water spring whose temperature is 1900 F. This hot water spring is known as Surya Kund that lies very near to the holy shrine of Yamunothri or Suryaputhri.

Surya Kund is a Hot Water Spring , situated in the interior of the mountain near to the Temple. It is considered to be an important place, cause the water is extremely hot there, that when a sack of rice is dumped into the water ithey get cooked which is then distributed to worshippers in the form of Prasad.

Devotees fasten rice and potatoes in a cotton cloth, and dip it in the water to be cooked. The water is so warm that the food gets prepared within few minutes. This cooked food is the main offering in the temple. A hot water spring in the precincts of snowy strengthens one's faith in the spirituality of the place.

Yanunotri Temple was build by the King of Tihri ,Maharaja Pratapshah .The temple is built from black marble . Temple’s valve are opened once during Akshaya Tritya and is closed at Yam Duitiya during the Kartik Month.

During winters , this valve is closed because of snow and travelling is not allowed. During the 6months of extreme winter season , the pundits of kharsali , with proper ceremonies take Ma Yamunotri their native place and worships her there . In this temple Yamuna and Ganga both the goddess are worshipped gracefully.

Vedas, Upanishads and many Ancient Scriptures have a detailed description on Yanunotri. In Puranas it is said that when due to old age Rishi Asit could not go to Rishi Kind for worshipping and taking a dip in Yamuna River , considering his ultimate devotion Ma Yamuna herself flowed into his Hut , This very place is known as Yamunotri. It is also known as Kalindi , as it originates from Kalindi Parvat.

Based on a story it is also said that Surya Dev’s Wife gave birth to Yamuna and Yamraj. Yamuna flowed as a river on earth , and Yamraj got Mrityu Lok .It is also said that whosoever takes a di in the Yamuna , is freed from the fear of Akala-Mrityu and incorporates Moksha. It is believed that Yamuna on the ocassion of Bhai Dooj, took a promise in the form of a blessing from his brother, that whosoever take a bath in the sacred water of Yamuna on this day , may not be sent to Yam-Lok . Therefore , as a tradition many devotees visit Yamuna river to worship Ma Yamuna on the auspicious ocassion of Bhai Dooj.

Yamunotri tapt kund is also known as Surya kund.Unique aspects of ritual practice at the site include hot springs where raw rice is cooked and made into prasad. It is located at an altitude of 3,235 metres approximately. A little ahead is the actual source of the river Yamuna which is at an altitude of about 4,421 metres approximately
