The Puranas say that Lord Narayana has killed the demon [of misery], Naraka Asura.

The Deepavali-bath,popularly known as "Ganga Snaan' which is taken by all people on the fourteenth moon in remembrance of the conquest of Naraka, signifies the bath of Jnana, which is taken after destroying the 'ego ' called Narakasura,
Sage Ramana has composed two verses in Tamil (given below).

The day [of the ego’s destruction] is the auspicious day of the fourteenth moon. Deepavali signifies the great Self-Effulgence which shines after destroying ego], .
Deepavali denotes the shining of Self after the destruction, through enquiry, of the greatest sinner,Naraka [the ego], who took the abode of this filthy body, which is the form of hell, as ‘I’.

We will remain as the victorious Narayana (God), the slayer of Narakasura. This slaying of Narakasura is the significance of Naraka Chaturdasi, and our subsequent shining as Narayana, who is our own real self, is what is symbolised by Deepavali, the festival of the ‘array of lights’.

Our humble Pranams to sage Ramana on this auspicious Deepavali Day.

It is a tradition that during Deepavali there should be smoke out of boiling oil in the house, which is stated to be auspicious. Oil can be heated not necessarily for savouries but to fry simple appalams also.
Frying appalam is easy, but making appalam is not that easy. When I was thinking about how we were making appalams at home making the hall juicy with gossips from meighbouring mamis, I thought of Sage Ramana who has altogether different
    perception for the ordinary appalam.

( Here is a rough translation of the above in English.)

    1.

    Try and make some poppadums.
    Eat them and your longing satisfy;
    Don't roam the world disconsolate.
Heed the word, unique and unspoken
Taught by the teacher true who teaches
The Truth of Being Awareness Bliss.
Try and make some poppadums ... and satisfy.

    2.

Take the black gram, ego self,
Growing in the five fold body field
And grind it in the quern,
The wisdom quest of Who am I?
    Reducing it to finest flour.
Try and make some poppudms... and satisfy.

    2.

    Mix it with pirandai juice,
    Which is holy company,
And mind control, the cummin seed,
The pepper seed of self restraint,
    The salt of non attachment,
    And asafoetida, the aroma'
    Of virtuous inclination.
Try and make some poppadums ... and satisfy.

    3

In the heart mortal place the dough
And with mind pestle inward turned,
Pound it hard with strokes of 'I', 'I',
Then flatten it with the rolling pin
Of stillness on the level slab of Being.
    Work away, untiring, steady, cheerful
Try and make some poppudams ... and satisfy.

    4.

Put the poppadum in the ghee of Brahman
Held in he pan of infinite silence
And fry it over the fire of knowledge.
Now as I transmuted into That,
Eat and taste the Self as Self,
    Abiding as the Self alone.
    Take and make some poppadums
    .... and satisfy.

But Ramana didn't stop with appalam.

We will see how sage Ramana perceives Deepavali.

Happy Gnana Deepavali to all the friends.

    Respected and dear madam,
    Diwali Namskarams to you!

this article of yours really endowed me with the ganam of not only Diwali but also about the ingredients that we masticate, grind , digest for the retention of our bodily needs and throw the unwanted ones.Thank you for the same mam.

likewise in our life also so many things get dumped in our mind and soul. we should also filter and drink and digest and absorb only the essential good things that will substantiate a good living and discard the unhealthy ones.

First time, i am learning about the philosophical significance of the spices we use to satiate our taste buds. these spices have indeed spiced up my ganam also. thank you so much mam.

Definitely you have lit ganam in us through this article.

diwali has been made bright , indeed.

    pranams.

    Dear Kalapakam,
    Deepavali Greetings.

Thank you for your kind words ,encouragement and appreciation- an exaggerated one.
I never thought that a girl of of 22 would be interested in topics ' like Gnanam' etc.Normally girls of this age like only modern trends.Actually with this hesitation I didn't become a member for a long time.

Thank you for the interest shown as observed from your wonderful responses and feed backs.
    Expecting more contributions from you.

    Respected mam.,
sorry, i think you have mistaken me to be in my early 20s?

mam, i am hit half century last year.
but thanks to my GREAT grand parents and parents, right from my childhood my interest was only in these and in becoming more and more good in words and deeds(not artificially put,of course). that is why , perhaps, i could relate to such divine (good) things easily.
luckily i learnt a lot good values from my mil( though she was viewed a terror, because she was righteous and principled). I am very grateful to her for my 95% of what i am now!

Sorry mam, i have bored you enough.

    Pranams
