When the old tradition of not drinking water was recommended, that was to avoid water retention and also avoid any water infections. But people forget that there are many other ways to get water. Have plenty of fluids, like fruits, which also have fiber and other vitamins required. Plenty of vegetables and less gassy veggies and gassy dals.
Also the method of bathing that one of my acquaintance followed was this. She would apply oil in the afternoon and get a massage and left the oil on the skin. Then had a normal bath the next day morning. This way the oil was absorbed by the body and extra oil was removed during bath.

Hi All
I am from Kerala and we normally take uluva kanji (methi porridge), yam curry, raw banana poriyal, and rasam after delivery for the initial 1 month, we normally avoid all food items which can cause gas, oily food and non veg. Tea and coffee is also not allowed to drink in the initial days when we are taking some legiyam for regaining uetrus back to normal !! I used to drink 2 glasses of milk and lots of water but i believe in olden days water was not allowed to drink. we normally take hotwater bath for 7-10 days after delivery with full body massage in pinda thailam (normally done by experienced ladies) and the water is boiled with some herbal leaves like neem, eucalyptus etc.

I was told by my friend that our elders were advising not to take water becoz, the milk secreting will be very watery and hence, not sure...In my family, we all used to take the deepavali legiyam in a dry form before our lunch & dinner which helps digestion for both mom & baby.
Also, fry manathakkali in ghee, consume with plenty of ghee(forget about weight) which will produce more milk. Similarly with garlic. But, some kids might be allergic to garlic like my daughter. After every new food intake, watch out yr kids' reaction for a day or two. If she is fine, proceed...If she feels some discomfort, then, stop it for a while and then, try again..
Rgds.
