Default Remedies for Sore/Cracked Nipples while Breast feeding

Hi all

Hope all are doing good.
I have few questions and i need ur help reg that.

Can i switch the brand of formula for my baby. He is 2 weeks old. I was using Enfamil Lipil with Iron so far, can i alternatively give another brand like similac or other enfamil varieties? Will it affect the baby in any way.

Also i am breast feeding him. But my nipples are too painful where i cudnt continue feeding him continously. So i give him formula too. Is it ok?

Any remedies for reducing the pain in my nipples, it seems to be cracked and tooo painful in such a way i cudnt touch it or even if a piece of cloth rubs slightly, its very painful. I think positioning the baby is not proper, but we had problems in breast feeding, he didnt latch on properly, i was not expressing earlier, i had C- section and he was in NICU and so on...... Now i am expressing milk, i was pumping, using nipple shield before he started to latch on, but for past 3 days he latches on me, but i am getting lots of pain even while he is sucking and also after that.

PLEASE HELP ME. IT WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL.

Also i have not completely recovered from my surgery, my incision is opened a little and its infected, i am under treatment now.

Thanks in advance

Hello,
Don't switch b/w formulas. It is not good.
Make it a habit to have only one formula.
For your pain, u might have to put some lotion to reduce the pain and heal them.
Better you check with your gyn or nurse.

Hope you feel better,
Punitha

Dear Sandhya,

Any reason you want to switch the brand of formula? If Enfamil with lipil is agreeing for your baby, then stick with it. It is better not to experiment on the kid at this stage. So stick to one formula brand and breast feeding.

Yes, sore nipples and cracked nipples , all are part of the BF problems. I think the best thing to do since you are feeding the baby now is to give hot compress on the affected area. Hot compress helps a lot. Avoid any ointments, unless your pediatrician says you can use them. but the best way to control the sore nipples is to make sure that you empty your breasts at by feeding more often. Also you can avoid wearing a Bra and make sure there is proper air circulation. But stay at it girl, you will find that all these problems will go away in no time. Looks like your son also has learnt the trick of feeding now. So try and cut down the formula.

Hi,

I can understand the pain you are going through. Do not switch formulas unless the baby is having problems with the current formula. It is better to continue with a single brand. Sore nipples are very painful. But hang in there the pain will disappear in 10-12 days. You can try applying lanolin or desi ghee to your nipples. It will help with the pain. If possible try to bear with the pain of sore nipples and avoid formula but if you are finding it extremely painful don't feel guilty about your decision. Do the best you can.
Take care and take lots of rest. You will be out of this phase very soon.

Kavya.

Dear Sandhya

I too had this problem with sore nipples and my pead suggested some chamomile based cream in India which I had to apply during non-BF times and wash off while feeding the baby.

Even if you don't apply any cream, just try to wash with plain water each time before BF,that will help a lot.And yes, proper latching is very important. The main reason for sore nipples is just that.

Dear Sandhya

Congratulations for your brand new baby!!!

well regarding changing formulas...not advisable but alaways ask your pediatrician before planning to introduce anything new for ur baby.

for sore nipples,i remeber using a lotion called LANOLIN(i received a sample after my delivery )..it did wonders for me...also u dont have to wash the lotion while BF your baby.but like always ask your pediatrician before using anything.

I know you have a lot on your hands...handling the new baby,Breast feeding,surgery...so take care of yourself, eat well and u need plenty of rest..
