how could the vehicle face any kind of disaster?
with aandavan* blessing the exteriors of the van
how could its occupants succumb to any tragedy?
a confidence in a presumption lies disillusioned
and shattered on the tracks of super fast death.

An unmanned railway crossing and a driver in a hurry,
what better receipe to crush the life out of little souls
as they impatiently, tiredly waited to reach their homes?
Tiny bags, petite lifeless limbs surrounded
by an inquisitive crowd wanting to lap up more
of another unpredictable, unwarranted mishap.

‘Why them?’ ‘Why the poor little things?’ answers to such queries lie best unanswered.
‘It’s karma,’ say some. ‘It’s numbers,’ say others.
Some entity more powerful than all the power we claim to possess.
What was is no more and what will be will wither away too-
shrishti is like that only,
maya entraps us leaving us to mourn the death of attachment.

Words spring easily from my mouth as if they were always there
to fall out like pearls of wisdom
but would I be the same level headed philosopher
if the dead mangled body of the child on the track was mine?!
Aandava!

* Aandavan means ‘God’ in Tamil. The van carrying the children had the name AandavanMatriculationHigherSecondary School written on it in large bold letters.

Thats such a touching poem.
Gave me goosebumps.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this poem based on a true incident?

Dear Godschild,

Thanks! Yes, indeed. It is based on a true incident.

Most of my poetry stem from emotions that cannot undo situations or events.

Glad you liked it.

Nice Day

Dear Saroj,

We hear of so many incidents when these kind of accidents take place and we have no answers for our questions. What can you say to a person who has lost his/her child? That Aandavan wanted it so?

Only the person who goes through this can understand what it all means. My heartfelt sympathies for your friend.

Kalyugam has taken away the speed breaker unfortunately!

Thanks for your appreciation.

Hi Shail
This is really a very touching poem.
When God is written on the vehicle what is the fault of those innocent kids, Now a days driving has become so horrilbe when a person goes out you just pray that they return home safely.
Your post is nominated for this month.
Congrats for that.

Dear Aruna,

I only wrote about my desperation in my poem. I couldn't do anything like most of us in such situations where we can only 'stand and wait' when such things happen all the time.

Thanks for the nomination. I really appreciate the fact that a poem has been nominated.

Nice Day.

Hi Ramya,

Nice that you liked the poem. Careless driving is indeed a normal thing today. People forget that one careless act can just destroy so many lives forever. And who will pay for that? No one. Will the dead come back? No.

Life is like that.

Best,
Shail

Heartwrenching poem, Shail!!

This poem reminds me of the Kumbakonam (TEMPLE TOWN) fire accident which claimed lives of school kids in the age bracket of 8 to 10. I can't imagine the trauma of their parents!!

There are many such evidences to disprove GOD's existence!!
