Dear Custard,
This is a friendly column. After reading ur posts i found that u r an animal lover. I am right now in abudhabi and planning to settle down in chennai from april 2010. I too love animals but more than me my daughter. So i plan to go for a pet which can guard and give me company too. I thought i can go for german shepherd. From ur post i came to know that u had micky - a german shepherd pet. I am totally zero in this field. Can u pls guide me what are the feeding habits of german shepherd starting from puppy stage and adult. I am keen in going for a male pup only. Approximately how much it will cost. What do u mean by certified and uncertified?

I don't want to scare u by putting so many questions but i have a basket full.

Regards,
Padmaja.

Hello Padmaja,

Welcome to India and very warm Welcome to begin your with a beautiful furry creature :thumbsup
I'm happy to note that u are interested in buying a dog and I feel you have taken the right choice of breed - German Shepherd !!! because they are very understanding to Humans from very young stage plus they are very good watch dogs. Before you know, he will become your family.
There are hundrens of websites about the breed but I feel its not necessary to over load with so many information now. There are so many dog - lovers here and they will be very eager to help you out as you progress, so just dont worry.

Hello Padmaja,

Few Important things that I would like to say is :

DAILY -
1.They need exercise : either a walk or a good play with your daughter atleast twice a day. Remember its a very healthy and fun filled activity for both dog and kids !!!

2.You can provide them with the same food as you consume and also the number of meals as we do. But this you do after consulting the Vet. Because some people give food only once or twice and they also give products like Pedigree. Since our Vet dint advice that, we just follow the first point.

3.Supplements - Tonic during puppy hood and somtimes during adult stage

MONTHLY :
De-worming - monthly once during puppy stage and once in three months when adult.

YEARLY:
Vaccination - The most important thing - yearly 2 vaccines.

This is just a guideline for you to foresee what kind of added work will be at home because of the addition family member. You are lucky as its going to be Chennai because there is a very good Government Veterinary Hospital (I think its at Velachery or Vepary : not sure :hide: Sorry.Others will help you on that)

Hello Padmaja,

Here is a link of video on German Shepherd : YouTube - Dogs 101 German Shepherd Video Animal Planet

Regarding Certificate : I know only KCI - Kennel Club of India. You can read about it here :
http://www.dogspot.in/kennel-club-india-dog-registration/

I have given below an extract(from that website) of what I felt is important for you now :

"If you are buying a KCI registered dog it means that you will get a KCI registration certificate from the breeder. KCI makes sure that the breed is up to the mark and at the time of whelping a KCI representative may also visit the breeder, to ensure maintenance of breed standards.

The registration certificate carries pedigree of 5 generations of the puppy. If the puppy comes with champion bloodline the registration will have parent’s name with Ch. as prefix. The cost of the puppy depends on number of champs appearing in the registration papers... greater the number of champs, costlier the puppy."

But I dont have idea if its right to buy those pups or other pups as Certified pups comes only from breeders and as far as I know most breeders dont take care of pups well.
So, regarding buying a pup, lets wait for otherIlites to give their opinion. They will also provide you with address and other details as most of them are at Chennai.

If for a long time, we dont get a reply here, you please start another thread with the right title, eg. "Buying and Care of German Shepard Dog". So that its catchy to others and they will view your query.

Dear Custard,
Thanks for the posts and really i enjoyed the video presentation. I think the govt. hospital is in vepery (i am in velachery). Do u know known dealers who gives healthy pups for sale? I am interested in male only. Sure playing and walking my daughter will take care. Y don't u post ur micky's photo in this post???

How to potty train the german shepherd pup? Mine is an individual house, so how to remind them to pass motion while taking them for walking??

Regards,
Padmaja.

Hi Padmaja,

You are Welcome.ya will post Mickey's photo. I have only very few pictures of him.!!!
ya Potty training is not very big task. Only the first few days they will make us to clean the floor !!!
During puppy hood, as you know, they will sleep most of the time. As soon as he wakes up take him and leave him in the garden or the Bathroom (which ever you want to train) and as soon as he finish his work, bring him inside the house, soon he will understand that toilet business has to be done at that place.
Also usually after every meal, they need to potty, so after meals, immediately take him to the place.
