iphone is a quadband phone. So it will work both in US and India. But if it purchased as a package from a service provider like AT&T, then you need to get it unlocked here.

Nothing much except you will have to unlock the phone so that it will work with every SIM, not just the particular service provider. But this will void the warranty.

I suggest you buy the phone from India. I checked the prices in India, Canada and US. There is very less price difference. If you can purchase it in Singpore or Malaysia, there might sizeable price difference.
