Hi ,

As of Laptops IBM Lenova comes first , followed by Dell and Sony then HP. i suggest you to go for IBM lenova for a solid covering with your specific configuration. if you want some trendy one you have to opt for sony whihc comes with cost..
Regarding your usage, you can change the configuration you want to work on your applications.

All the best

For just student and studying purpose go for basic configuration and Dell, Sony , HP you can choose with them.

Sony will be handy if you want some funky looks and stylish well for performance I guess Dell is good.

Laptops???? Sounds interesting...
One of my favorite topics to discuss upon...

OK... I have been waiting for years to buy one.... Atlast I bought 1..... I have bought a HP Pavilion dv7t Laptop...

It is not just the matter of which Laptop (i mean the brand) to go upon.
We need to consider the following
  1. Why we are going for a Laptop?
  2. Is desktop better than a Laptop? (sometimes yes, sometimes no)
  3. Is it latest technology compliant? (Having the hot list H/W components... S/w of-course needed, but can be installed/removed any time depending upon our need)
  4. Is it going to be used for Fun/Learning/Business or official purposes?
  5. Is it worth the money?
  6. Can it be upgradable and compatible with upcoming hardware / softwares?
  7. Last but not the least, the money factor.... Is it worth the investment?
The main h/w features that we need to look into either Laptop / PC are
  1. RAM (nowadays 3GB or 4GB RAMs are loaded with systems)
  2. HDD (160GB / 250GB / 320 GB harddisks are available) - Again, it depends upon our need
  3. Processor (Dual core or Core 2 Duo - 1.8GHz or above is better)
  4. Video RAM (optional)
  5. Screen size (15.4" / 16" / 17") - Bigger screens are good for Gaming / Entertainment. For education/business purposes, 14" / 15.4" will apt.
  6. Spending this much, why can't we go in for webcam??? (now most of the Laptops do have this integrated webcams)
  7. Wireless LAN / Wi-fi....
ok... ok.... i am stopping with this...

Why I am telling about all these are, generally upgrading / repairing a Laptop is too costly when compared to a desktop...

But is has lot of advantages.... So think slightly out of the box before you could decide which one to go for.... This is just not only for C, Java et al... What about it's future value additions???

I heard Compaq also scores good.... Sony is one of the costliest.... Dell is rigid.... Hey forget the gr8 don IBM Thinkpad / Lenovo.... Each models / brands has their own adv & dis-adv.... Thats all I can add up..

Hope it could be slightly helpful... Do let us know what you have finally decided...

All the best
