Default Which Virus Protection s/w is most effective?

hi all,

My comp has slowed down quite a bit and I think it has got infected!!
:(

Could you share what is the best virus protection software you all are using and how effective is it?

I believe I have to even install spyware protection, i.e. pop-ups and pop-under windows opening in the background without my knowledge or without clicking on them when I am connected to the internet.

Is PC Tools Spyware Doctor good to tackle this menace? Or has anyone come across something better?

Please help. Appreciate your inputs..
best,
Hasita

If you are looking at buying, I heard that FIRE works better.

If you are looking at free try out avast/avg..both are good.. I have used both.

Aishu, Shanvy,
thanks for your suggestions.
Aishu, is Symantec = Norton (2008)? I checked out the website yesterday, it has mentioned Norton products therein.

Shanvy, what's the website for Avast? Haven't heard of it before.

Btw, I purchased PC Tools Spyware Doctor a few days back, but they did not send the license code, so I am unable to clean up the infections.

And they are not replying to my emails reg. the same.
I will probably purchase another one if really good.
thanks,
hasita

If you want a good antivirus along with real-time file protection/web access protection system, I recommend the usage of NOD32. Not many know this software.

This has small footage (~10MB RAM) and is better than Notron.

The best part being, it detects and removes (automatically) the virus/worms from your removable media, which spreads these.
