Need pointers on local help, internet,classes for temporary stay

Hi Ilites,

I am happy that I would be moving back to India after almost 22 years of stay all over the world.

Now, I badly need your recommendation/suggestion on the following:

My new apartment is in Ceebros, Saligramam on Arcot Road, next to Avichi school. Since I will be staying there during the first 6 months, until my husband winds up from US to join me in India.

As I am totally new to the area and its surroundings, please suggest:

1. Need a browsing centre to check my mails and book travel tickets by train/air and also print...so internet browsing centre with printer, fax, scan facility in the walkable distance if any,

2. To connect Net (wired/wireless), what is the best option in that area and how much does it cost.. for unlimited browsing/download on a monthly basis and the best provider with good customer service.

3. Need a good dependable maid just to sweep, mop the apt (its a 3 bedroom apt) once a day... how much it costs?

4. Any good orphanage or oldage home etc., nearby to volunteer for few hours on a daily basis after settling down.

5. Need info on yoga and meditation classes in and around the neighbourhood (saligraman, vadapalani, KK nagar)

All possible info that I could get from you people would make my life betterand comfortable.

Others can help more than I but one thing: until you get set up better if you have a laptop/computer you can get slow internet through Airtel home office unlimited connection for Rs99 a week. It is adequate for email and chat but not for uploads/downloads. I found it very helpful while travelling.

I would suggest you to get broadband connection (Airtel) . If u call them they will give it to you within 3 days. Customer care is also good. any trouble on the same day they will try to fix it.

There were many plans... We took a plan 799+taxes for unlimted browsing

Usaully in those kind of appartments they wont allow any maids from outside. there will be a security there in ur apartment if u tell them u want a maid they will arrange.

Brinda.. One quick question about the airtel Inet service.. U have mentioned its Rs.799+ tax for unlimited hours, do they instal a land line phone too? If they do, then its a pretty good deal. While I am away, my mom can use landline for her calls. Please clarify.

Bsnl is better. they have many option. days when you are not using the landline/broadband, you can just pay a minimum of 199. there are a lot of schemes, available. you can take a landline, and take unlimited at 750 for the time you are going to use that is 6 months and then switch off to the 120/199 scheme. you have a 400rs plan where you get some amount of free calls for the landline too...
if you have a rationcard/mom's rationcard/id' and address proof, you can get a line as soon as you land in india.

A maid, check out somebody already there, to just do mopping for your flat. these days it is at 300/500 if you want them to mop everyday depending on the area, that way there is no problem of reliability...

for the yoga/meditation i think your neighbours/security of your flats will be the best guide..they will full of information

We had BSNL broadband connection in chennai,which i feel the speed is good and less buffering.You can get a wireless router for it.This is economical and the service is good.

am travelling to india from US, and will be working from india remotely for couple of weeks...i live at north chennai...looking for a good internet service providers in chennai...currently we have BSNL 500 rs plan at our home in india...please suggest, how good is the speed with this plan...do you think i should switch to a higher plan...to get more speed and unlimited downloads..please suggest

sorry for the delayed replay, yes they will give landline and there is no rental for landline.
