SEA-SHELL PAINTING

If you live near the water, you could make a field trip out of this activity collect hand/bucket full of shells with varied sizes and take the opportunity to discuss the sea and the animals who live there.

Material required

Seashells (large chalky, white shells)
Jar or water.
Watercolour or tempera paints /acrylic medium.
small brushes.


Step 1
Rinse the shells clean and let dry.

Step 2
Paint tiny pictures on the inside of the shell. Fish, water, sunsets, palm trees ... anything you want. Can do stunning artwork over the Gastro-pod shells.

You could create a number of shell paintings and display them around the edge of a frame, or you could glue them to a terra cotta pot. The possibilities are endless.

As the name suggests, it is a hobby in which a person decorates clay pots,mugs,plates,diyas and vases in various ways. It is a very interesting hobby as the results are often quite diverse (from what you expected!) and creative. One does not even need to learn it from any one nor are there any hard and fast rules to be followed. This hobby is as old as the art of pottery itself and nowadays it is gaining momentum and one can see various artisans selling painted pots on the roadsides. What is best about this hobby is that one need not learn it from anyone, as all it needs is creativity and, of course, some earthen crafts.


Pottery painting

Method 1
Materials Required :
Enamel Paints (Different Colours)
Brush
Water
Container
Earthen Pot


Procedure :

1. At first, colour your earthen pot with any enamel paint.
2. Now take a container containing three-fourth quantity of water and spill different colours of enamel paints into it.
3. The different colour paints float on the water.
4. Now gently hold your painted pot at its edge and dip it into the water and twist it around, in the water and slowly take it out of the container.
5. Keep the pot aside without disturbing it.
6. The wet paints will slowly take its own design and shade.
7. Wait till the pot dries.
Your pot painting is ready.
This art form can be done by any age group and each time you do it, you get a different design.

Tips :

The more shades of paints you spill in the water, the more colourful and beautiful the pot will become.
Do not disturb or shake the pot after it is taken out of the water.

Method 2

Materials Required :
Ceramic powder
Earthen pot
Fevicol or glue
Fevicryl metallic colour
Brush


Procedure :
1. Take some ceramic powder and mix it with fevicol in a bowl until you get a mixture with loose consistency (like a cake batter)
2. Pat this around the pot giving it a matte finish.
3. Allow it to dry.
4. Finally paint it with fevicryl metalllic colour of your choice.
Your pot is ready. This is an easy way of decorating an earthen pot.

Method 3

Materials Required :
Earthen pot
Brushes
Enamel paints
Fabric paint (Fevicryl)
Tooth brush

Procedure :
At first, colour your earthen pot with your choice of enamel paint.
Then, keep it aside for 10 minutes.
Later, take a fabric paint (contrast colour to the enamel paint) onto the bristles of the tooth brush.
Now using your fingers, sprinkle the paint from the tooth brush onto your painted pot.
After 18 minutes, blend the same fabric colour used onto the pot with a painting brush.
Now keep it for drying under the sun. It will give a cracked effect.
Your pot is now ready.

Tips :
Use light shade paints as the base colours and darker colours for sprinkling.

Pot Painting with Mseal
Materials Required

Mseal 1 box
A pot
Black enamel colours
Gold Colours
Varnish
Brush
Some talcum powder


Procedure:
1. Paint the pot with black enamel colour and let it dry well.

2. Mix the two parts of mseal to make a single dough and then shape it using talcum powder to make grapes or flowers as desired.

3. Stick them on the pot...make sure you finish sticking the mseal within twenty minutes of mixing it.

4. Let it dry well. Colour it using gold colour and let it dry.

5. Finally apply a coat of varnish.

Ceramic Pot

You can also make ceramic pot painting, you'll need some extra materials like Ceramic Powder and fevicol.
All you have to do is mix the ceramic powder and fevicol make a paste of it u can make flowers and or any figures as you wish with creamic.


For the background:

*Mix Ceramic pwd and Fevicol in 3:2 Ratio like Idly batter with a tablespoon.
*Now take little mixture in a knife without lumps and press in the pot little upwards and bring it down so that u form a rose petal shape.
*Complete one row and do the next row of petals in between two petals of the first row.
*Complete the pot and let it dry for 24 hrs.

For Making the flower:

1. Mix Ceramic pwd and cornflour in the ratio 3:1 and add small pieces of cotton to make the binding strong and mix with req quantity of fevicol to make the dough.(U just take a little cotton and make it into very smal pieces before mixing the flour with fevicol..It will give u good binding and prevents to some extent from getting cracks in the work.)
2. Now take req quantity of the dough and roll it into thilakam (cone) shape and make patterns with knife, stick it in the pot.
3. Make 10 or 13 petals for the first row leaving gap in the centre for pollens.
4. Then make 10 or 13 more for next row and fix them in between two petals.
5. Let it dry and in the mean time make the pollens.
6. For the pollens make very small balls and make tails for the balls by rolling with ur fingers (like meteors).
7. Make 100 balls and let it dry.
8. Now take a ball from the dough and fix in the centre of the sunflower using fevicol and fix the dried pollens in the ball and let it dry.
9.For making the black flower take small balls and make thilakam shape and press with ur hands, make 100 of petals and let it dry for a day.
10.Take a big ball and stick it in the pot with fevicol and fix the petals row by row from outside to inside and let it dry.
11. For the leaf , take a real leaf of req size, take a big ball and make into a thilakam shape and spread across the leaf from the centre after applying little oil in the leaf so that it comes out from the leaf with impressions.
12.Now stick the leaf to ur imagination before it dries.


P.S-----Its a combination of ceramic powder, plaster of paris, corn flour and fevicol also cotton. the mixing is very important. Plaster of paris and ceramic powder are two different things. For begineers you can use Chalkpowder and fevicol mixture. Once u master than u can do in ceramic. You will need 2 cups of ceramic powder, half a cup of plaster of paris & cornflour, approx 250 gm of fevicol sh and little cotton. Please don’t use water at any cost. Once you have mixed the above. The above mixture should be wrapped in tight plastic cover. Can be kept upto 20days.

Ceramic painting

Materials Required:

A Plate
Camel texture white
Camel Acrylic gloss medium
A design
Carbon paper
Pencil
Oil Paints
Brushes

Procedure:
1. Take the plate and clean it well.
2. Trace the design on to the plate using a carbon paper.
3. Give the outline of the design using a cone filled with Camel texture white.
4. Wait till the outline dries.
5. Now paint the design with oil paints. Choose colours according to your taste.
6. It takes 2-3 days to dry.
After drying apply camel acrylic gloss medium onto the plate. It gives a glossy finish to the painting and also helps it to last long.
Your ceramic painting is ready.

To make a cone:
Take a thick plastic cover or sheet, roll it in the shape of a cone and stick the edges. Fill the paste inside the cone and close it sticking the ends tightly. Make a small hole with a pin at the tip of the cone. The fine paste can be squeezed out in a thin strand. This can be used to give the out line of the design in the plate.


Tips on Painting Ceramics

Painting is a creative way to make your ceramic projects personal and unique. Follow these tips for beautiful results.

Clean your ceramic item. This is very important to do so that your paint adheres to your item properly. Use your scraper gently in a downward motion on all the seam lines. These are the lines that were created by the mold you used to make your ceramic item. Use your sponge to erase the seam lines and wipe down the surfaces. Dampen your sponge and wring it out completely. Excess water in your sponge can cause your piece to become pliable again.

Choose the paint colors you want to use and a variety of paintbrushes depending on how you decide to decorate your pottery. Pottery paint is acrylic glaze and most commonly is sold in bottles at craft stores or shops where you can make and paint pottery crafts. If you are creating a stenciled piece or painting a smaller area, one or two bottles will be enough. If you are creating something bigger or painting all one color, you will need three to five bottles.

Remember when buying paint that it takes three coats of paint for your brush stokes not to show. Three coats allows the finished piece to be all one color instead of various shades of one color. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat.

Use different brushes for different techniques. Make sure the bristle edges are straight and even. A broader brush is used to apply paint to an entire surface. Smaller, fine-pointed brushes can be used to paint specific designs or to fill in bits of color. Have one brush per color to avoid accidentally mixing paints.

Use lighter-colored paint first if you will be overlapping the colors. Darker-colored paint will bleed through the lighter ones if you use the darker color first.

Use stencils if desired. They can be held in place by hand or by masking tape before applying the paint. You can also use masking tape to make straight lines in a design. Place the tape, paint the line along the edge and pull off the tape when the paint dries.

Experiment with imaginative ways to paint. Explore using different objects to create special paint effects. For example, use a sponge to sponge-paint in dabs of color. Instead of touching your paintbrush to the surface, flick the paint at your piece and let it land wherever it will to create a spatter paint effect. Look at ordinary things around the room and consider how you might use them to apply the paint in a unique manner.

Glaze and fire your finished piece in the kiln for a one-of-a-kind personal creation.
